I really should start carrying stuff again; I got out of the habit and that could get me killed, you never know. :) I never really carried anything really even before... I carried knives and a can of pepper spray that was meant for dogs but would work on humans, but the thing is, I had to have that can of spray everywhere and once I had no place to hide it but inside my sock and shoe under my baggy pants... but it fell out and I lost it. :( I've made plastic and wooden knives to take on planes, but never did so because what was the point? I could just use the sharp edge of a magazine or roll up the stiff, laminated safety-procedure-explanation card... however, knives are the best for just everyday life, and sometimes you need a knife to cut stuff anyway... and pepper spray, preferably with marking dye in it, that shoots really far, is also necessary IMO... never could find any tho. I don't carry weapons.

If I did I'd be just as bad as the criminals.

How many times have you been directly threatened or involved in a fight, Ana54?

JK; I'm not that narcissistic!

Do you carry it around sometimes, TM1? :) Do you sleep with it?

I carried a gun in the bush for awhile. Oldtimers say, "Better to carry it for thirty years and never need it than to need it for thirty seconds and not have it."

I got to thinking that if I carried an anvil around for thirty years I'd probably find a situation where I needed one, but I don't carry an anvil.

I got some bear spray, since I spend almost all my time in bear country, but I usually don't keep it with me.

I used to carry a knife with me, but eventually my parents caught on and started taking my weapons. Nowadays I dont see why I would need one but I would like to start collecting again some day :)

Really? I guess they're intimidated byt the fact that you're a big strong guy and in their eyes don't need it. But people picked on you, right? Tons of people at once, right? I can relate. :) Your parents could have gotten you killed! :o Well, you could have buried them and retrieved them when you got out of the house I suppose. :)

What do they think you'll do, knife your dad?

I'm a girl and my mom was happy when I got a can of pepper spray and encouraged me to carry it. She had one herself years ago but lost it and never got another one; she never carries anything any more. Hasn't at all in her life except the brief time with the pepper spray. Her ugliness/grossness is enough of a weapon. JK!

I plan on buying a handgun once I'm old enough. I live right between two of the biggest crime cities in Ohio, one of which is also one of the biggest crime cities in the whole world. I wouldn't feel safe with just my wits and fists in either of those places.

No, actually I "hung out" with the "wrong crowd" when I worked at Stop&Shop. Back in the day, there was this outside brake area where there was no cameras and we got away with a lot of s**t there. Including selling/buying knives and other related weapons, smoking weed, drinking, and so forth. I didnt do a whole lot of talking there but I did do a lot of drugs/drinking and I bought some knives. There were a lot of druggies who hung out there too even though they didnt work there, and there were a few alchaholics who worked in the different departments and took brakes there so I always had someone to go to when I was having a bad day. Which was every day, unless I had a fix of some sort. There were quite a few days where I just sat there pretty much the whole time instead of doing any work, there were plenty of other cart pushers anyway. And the managers never payed attention so I rarely got in trouble for slacking off.
Anyway, I did a lot of stupid s**t in my time, but I did get a lot of cool weapons out of it :) I dont think I need them for protection really, and I dont think Ill ever want to use them, but I just like having them for collective purposes.

Be sure to (discretely) check your local laws about caring weapons (concealed and otherwise). I used to carry a collapsible baton until I discovered that they are illegal in the state I am living in. A few places even require a permit to carry pepper spray.

That said, it is worth carrying a small knife and a flashlight with you “just in case.” (Things like small penknives and those “multi-tools” are almost always legal, except in places where you have to pass through a metal detector in order to enter.) I carry a “Streamlight Baton Light” which, in theory, could also be used as self-defense weapon. The other thing I carry is a “punch”, which can be used to shatter a glass window, and probably could also be used as self-defense weapon.

I always have a variety of weapons with me; I probably carry more weapons than Mad Max. I've got a concealed permit and regularly carry a handgun. As a husband and a father, it is my responsibility to be ready and able to defend my family, though I pray to the gods that I will never have to. I am wise enough to understand that it is not the job of the police to protect me; their job is to show up and take notes after a crime of violence has been committed. Of course with great power (the power to kill) comes great responsibility, which I take very seriously; but I trust my own judgment, and am more highly trained at firearms use than many police officers. Though hoplophobs may fear me (because of their own insecurities and lack of trust in themselves), people are safer when I'm around.
