y'know, I hate working in retail. I'll tell you why...
No one cares about the poor sap behind the register. All they want is for you to ring up their stuff - QUICKLY - and know the prices of everything in the store including all UPCs and what's on clearance.
The companies who make the products don't care about retailers either. They'll put the UPC somewhere where you can't find it or on a side that's hard to scan - especially if the item is heavy. They love to hide the UPC and make the cashier lift it up to search for the damn thing. On a package of candy or something similar wrapped in that crinkly cellophane, the UPC is ALWAYS under a crease or so small that the laser can't scan the bar code and you have to take the time to type in all 10 digits of the UPC.
Customers who come through the line always throw stuff at you stating, "that's on clearance, it $1.99" but it rings up at $12 something and they insist they got it off the clearance rack. You co to check but it doesn't belong there. You try to explain that someone must've put it there after looking at it but they don't want to hear it. They want their deal. You try explaining that the tag on the shelf or rack doesn't match what the product IS even. I mean, if there was a dress on a shelf where beach balls went and the beach balls were $0.99 but the pants were $30, they'd insist on getting the pants for the beach ball price.
But...what if it were reversed? What if the beach ball was on the pants rack? Would the customer be willing to pay $30 for a beach ball?
