I have always thought it was bizarre to put body parts from one person into the body of another.

I have yet to have a part fail on me such that a replacement... even a used one... would be an option.
I have not had a family member in the same situation either.

I wrestled with the idea when we were expecting our baby... would I offer her a kidney?

Part of my feeling on this subject comes about from my view of death.
I have never had a fear of death. I have had a fear of what happens after death... or more like being scared of the dark... the dark isn't what people are scared of, it's not knowing what's beyond the dark.

Anyway, even though I work in the medical field, I do not hold that all life should be saved or extended through artificial means.
I've struggled with the organ transplant issue for a long time.
I have no final answer as to what I would do if asked to donate a kidney to someone while I was alive.

I know I am not into offering up my organs after I am dead.

AND... I do not want someone else's body parts in me! Perhaps I'd change my mind after being on dialysis for a while, or having my heart degenerate on me slowly but painfully. I really don't want to live beyond my time.. whatever that is... and I do not want to be kept alive through artificial means.

What say you oh great ones of Wrong Planet? :D

Hmm.. you did not have an answer for 'NO'

I dont feel im a very selfish person, but I think by the time I get old enough anyways their will be other options then transplant, but as far as giving another body part, even one that I dont need I would have to at this time say no, if I live a long and full life I certainly will not have a problem donating a kidney but as for now I feel I need all my organs to live a good life. Of course if im dead I wont be needing them, I have yet to decide if I wanna donate, 50% yes and 50% no, so at the moment I have not filled out the back of my drivers license, it is blank because I have not decided upon my death if I want to give up organs. I am a tad religious and for those reasons I am almost inclined to not become a doner, tho if that is my choice then I certainly dont feel I have the right to accept someone elses organs if I too wont donate, that IMO is wrong.

I just dont know now...

You're right about the NO option! 8O
I thought I had put it in there for the last option... sorry!

Since there's no option for NO, everyone will just have to sign over their organs... hey, it's just one mistake... anyone could have made it, huh?

I am certainly interested in how 'religious' people view organ donation.
Does GOD really want us meddling about in affairs of life & death?
Should we really be playing Baron Von Frankenstein with each other, or just accept the bodies GOD has given us?
Extending life seems to go against the idea that we are supposed to die and ascend to heaven (well, only those who are saved).
Aren't we just pissing off the old man by doing everything we can to stay down here?

I know I am into offering up my organs after I am dead. I don't care.

In my native country its different, if you don't specify exactly that you don't want to give up your organs after death, you are automatically an organ donor...

God gave us the possibilities to be doing it, so...

When I die, people can do what ever they want with my corpse.

If giving my organs when I am dead to someone else keeps them alive, then I have no reason to say no.

Dead is dead...you feel nothing, no emotion, no pain, you don't have memories etc. You are gone. So personally, I couldn't care less what is done with my corpse.

I'm not selfish - if I'm not going to be using them, then by all means somebody else should get to.

As someone who grew up in a hardcore Protestant family, I'd say that the usual viewpoint (which I do agree with) is that life is sacred and should be preserved - or failing that, at least made more enjoyable - by any means necessary. Secondarily, the dead can't be converted to your religion of choice.

I'm just hoping I'll have some working organs to donate by the time I die! :-)

I think England should definitely have an opt-out rather than an opt-in system. So many people's lives could be saved or improved.

Personally I don't believe it would be something I would consider.

Organ transplants to me equal quantity...not necessarily quality of life...and I prefer the later. I don't want someone prolonging my life if it means I still can't live it the way that I want to.

Like you, it's not death I fear...just what's after it...just that fear of the unknown nothing more.

About the only transplant I would consider would be one concerning the eyes...although my eyes aren't good to begin with so I doubt I would ever be a donor...but that's the one thing I can't imagine being without...I don't like the dark.

I think that people should be able to choose whether or not to donate in times of plenty, but in times of need, post-death organ donation should be compulsory.

I would definitely donate my organs. If it could save someone's life, and I'm dead and not using them. I don't have a doubt in my mind.

i think, if you can help save a persons life with a bit of you that you don't need, but it will mean the differance between life and death for another person, then, yes, give your organs =)
