- NIN, Johnny Cash- Hurt
- Rolling Stones- Wild Horses
- The Beatles- Julia
- Keane- On A Day Like Today
- Michael Jackson- Stranger In Moscow
- A lot of Eminem's early work
- John Lennon- Imagine

When I was growing up, the Beatle's were my favorite group. I don't think of Julia as depressing, more melancholy. Ok, I just checked meloncholy on dictionary.com and have to default to def 2. which is 'sober, thoughtful' since def 1. is basically 'depressed' Since my wife's name is Julia, I definitely have positive feelings when I listen to the Beatle's tune.

During high school I really liked Dan Fogelberg, whose music is pretty melancholy. I think that such music helps me when I'm feeling particularly blue. However, if I listen to it in exclusion then I can get a very pessemistic, even black outlook toward life.

I grew up with Mr. Rogers. I remember distinctly the episode where he talked about working out anger by playing the piano in an angry fashion. Perhaps music has an ability to take our feelings (when we are out of sorts in one way or another) and direct them more toward where we would want them to be.

You did know the Song "Julia" was about John Lennon's Mum, who had died. That's why I found it a bit depressing.

Didn't know that. Maybe I'll post it on the 'Something I learned today' thread

I do! If I listen to a depressing song, and daydream and get into that song, afterwards i feel a lot better, its weird!

I don't get cheered up, but when I listen to a sad song when I'm already feeling down, it intensifies the feeling and I'm overwhelmed with a beautiful, sorrowful rush.

Yeah, that's kind of what I mean, I get goosepimples, and almost feel like i'm gonna cry (sorry, that sounds weird). I think the only thing that would "cheer me up" is winning the lottery!

A song by Death Cab for Cutie always filled me up with hope, though its quite a depressing song. It reminds me that someday, I will find someone who likes me for me. Until that day, I guess I'll have to wait. *sigh* Its called "Someday you will be loved" By Death Cab for Cutie (If you hadn't already guessed! :D)

I like songs which symbolize great tragedy and perseverance.

"To Zanarkand- Final Fantasy X" is the most heartwarming and awe-inspiring song I've ever heard, yet also tragic. If you know the story of FFX, it adds to the tragedy.

I'm not a fan of rap, but I too can appreciate Eminem's old stuff. He was definitely good.

The new stuff is f***ing pop -.-

I hope you're not trying to imply that Genesis is not pop. Because you'd be in for a rude awakening. ;)

I wouldn't call it "f***ing pop" I'd call it f***ing crap, that song with Acon, what the hell was he thinking. Yeah I don't like rap either, it was just Eminem

Yes, I usually feel quite happy and content after listening to comparatively depressing stuff such as

'Roads' by Portishead,

or 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)' by Radiohead

or 'My Immortal' by Evanescence
