When I was growing up, the Beatle's were my favorite group. I don't think of Julia as depressing, more melancholy. Ok, I just checked meloncholy on dictionary.com and have to default to def 2. which is 'sober, thoughtful' since def 1. is basically 'depressed' Since my wife's name is Julia, I definitely have positive feelings when I listen to the Beatle's tune.
During high school I really liked Dan Fogelberg, whose music is pretty melancholy. I think that such music helps me when I'm feeling particularly blue. However, if I listen to it in exclusion then I can get a very pessemistic, even black outlook toward life.
I grew up with Mr. Rogers. I remember distinctly the episode where he talked about working out anger by playing the piano in an angry fashion. Perhaps music has an ability to take our feelings (when we are out of sorts in one way or another) and direct them more toward where we would want them to be.
You did know the Song "Julia" was about John Lennon's Mum, who had died. That's why I found it a bit depressing.
