Ok a while ago I was watch Carlos Mencia on Mind of Mencia. He was talking about being proud of your race like black power. But then he was talking about how when someone white says something about being proud of their race its being seen as being racist. Im just wondering what all of you think. Im very non racist and im not offended by anything and im just wondering what you people think about this topic.

You CAN be proud of your race without being racist.

It's just that most are racist.

I think the word "pride" is often used because there's no word for "not ashamed or embarrassed about".

Sorry you feel that way. :(

I am French and Irish blenderized, along with some Scottish, English, Cherokee, and a few others in small quantities. Maybe what I am, not by my choice, is something to be proud of or something to be ashamed of. Or maybe some generalities can be a little to general to be good. Specifically you are cool. Why not be proud of that?

I think being proud of something I can not control and did not achieve is kind of silly--- I'm white. Am I "proud" of it? not really. I didn't DO anything to achieve that status, it just happened. I was born that way. Am I "happy" about it? Yeah, sure. I can be happy about it. I'd be happy if I were black or hispanic or Inuit or whatever. I'm happy about being female. Sure.
People should be proud for things they DO that they feel good about doing--- achievements. Like getting a college degree, saving a cat from a tree, exercising and losing 5 Lbs, or running a marathon. Those are achievements. Being white or black or tall aren't controllable things--- you can't actively pursue them so how can you be proud of any of them? You can be happy about them, though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being proud of your race/s per se. I do think there's something wrong with spiting other people solely because of their race or skin color. Personally I'm not ashamed of my race, but I'm not gung-ho about it.

My blood, like most peoples, is mixed. As far as I know I'm Scotch-Irish, Cherokee(My great grandmother was full blooded, so I'm 1/16), and possibly Welsh blooded. I've got a few famous people from the past in my family tree, like Ulysses S. Grant, and some famous hell fire preacher I forget the name of. I know next to nothing about my dads side of the family, which is where the Cherokee bit comes from. His real dad abandoned them when he was little, his step dad was a Hitler youth and abused him, his mother is/was blind and didn't do anything about it, so like I said in another post, our family's not tight.

I don't have a problem with being proud of race, ethnicity, and nationality in principle so long as they don't cause trouble for other people. I value individuality overall and the reason why a like something is not because I was born into it, or ended up there involuntarily. I like London. You would have to get used to it but it is not because I have lived here since I was young.

I've noticed recently that when people say that they are proud of their race it isn't because they are racists but they are treated like minorities or like they are inferior. When they say ...and proud of it. What they are really saying is, you can't push me down, quit treating me like I'm inferior.

There are those though that assert their pride because they are on a superiority trip but underneath that lies insecurity and ignorance.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. It would be nice if people could grow beyond having to identify with groups and just be proud of themselves as individuals. I can understand wanting to preserve cultural traditions, but people take it way too seriously. I just don't get it.

very true.

In the other, more commonly understood meaning of pride, i am curious to see if and how people could elaborate further eg. I am proud of my race because...

Although I sometimes find it funny, Chapelle show and mind of mencia "being proud of your race" line is a thin guise for making fun of other races.

I am pround of my ethnic heritage, but I do not like designating myself as "white." The term "white" in America is a very loaded term, which makes it a very poor term of racial designation. I'm mostly Celtic (Scottish/Irish) , French and German, with some Jewish and African. I am very proud to be all of those.

I have no problem with others being proud of their race or ethinic heritage too - but I do think they need to do some self-reflection if they feel the need to antagonize other people to feel validated.
