Unlike a lot of other interests that I have or have had, my interest in Seals is mostly in watching them. I don't read and absorb lots of information about seals like I do with other stuff that I like. Where I live the only type of seal seen with any regularity is the Harbor Seal. I could go a few miles away and see larger or other seals, but I am satisfied to occasionally go to the pier and watch a Harbor Seal if it decides to show up. Watching seals swim and dive and patiently waiting to try and see where it will come up, and if it has a fish is something I can do for fairly long periods of time. They are so well adapted for the water, to me these are fascinating animals. How about the rest of you? :D

The seal I am most famliar with are the harp seal, the ones that people are always protesting against the hunting of.

I would see them in the harbor and every winter there would be one on the ice next to my house, they are nice to look at but they are not very friendly. We would hunt them every year (The anti-seal hunt protests still contiune however) however their deaths are split-second quick and they are dead before we skin and eat them. There are sooooo many out there that you can see large ripples in the water from far off, they swim in packs and they are huge!

I saw Seal Island:

Off the coast of South Africa. It also harbours one of the greatest concentrations of Great Whites.

Yeah Chibi_Neko I understand your point about not petting seals. If I did happen to get that close I'm sure I wouldn't bother trying. Here in California, an occasional story pops up about someone trying to pet a "cute" squirrel or chipmunk and getting the s**t bit out of them. Then they have to get the Rabies series and may be exposed to Plague as well. I'd like to see the big groups you mention. Do you have to get a Hunting License, and has anyone ever mistaken a hippie protester for an ugly seal and hit them? :D I didn't know that Paul McCartney got bit by a seal either. thanks for telling me that , it is hilarious!

Excellent picture, we do have a couple of areas here in California with large numbers of seals/sea lions, that picture makes me think maybe I should go visit one of the areas with lots of seals. thanks for the great replies!

What is there not to love about seals? :)

I saw a large colony of seals on the rocks when I went to the Scilly Isles (south of Cornwall, England) last summer. The quality of my camera was terrible, so I don't have any photos to show of it. :(

Totally agree Miss Contrue, even professionals get nailed messing with wild animals. Steve Irwin could still be around if he had exercised better judgement. :)

They look cuter when they're being clubbed. ;)

No, I don't mean that. Seals are lovely animals to look at. :)

It's a particularly stupid joke that didn't come off.
