Ok ,i know that i'm probley going to sound like a b***h here, (again) but i just am not geting the forced social fo pas that the NT want to shove down your throat! Whats the point of the question? Dose any one just want to tell the grocery clerk or the fast food window guy "is that a rhetorical question! When asked" how are you today ".... "how you doing"...ext... especially when they sound like Eeyore when there saying it! the only thing they really want to hear is fine, i mean you can't tell the truth! right?? wouldn't a better question to ask be, how can i help you, or did you find everything?
i don't eat fast food but i still have 3 kids at home a 28 year old aspie son, a 19 year old aspie son (the aspies are harder to get rid of) and a 13 NT daughter she's the big fast food juckie and i'm not going to argue with her, its her BUTT, not mine, so any whys she always saying to me in the drive though line "don't say it! don't say it!" then sceems acrossted the car were fine! good even!! (and then will b***h all the way home they will spit in are food mom!) i'd just once would like to tell the truth-"well let me see not so good , my life sucks,my house payments due i have 2 growen men living with me and i can't get layed" can you imagen there face!! !! to day i was at wallmart and the casher saids how are you to day mam? so a say " is that a rhetorical question?" he saids " thats good" and then i handed him the exzaced change while he was ringing up the last item. and next time i'm going to self check!

Most cashiers are trained to say "How are you today?" to the customers. It doesn't mean they necessarily want to, it's just a part of the job. It doesn't mean that they care how you are, either. They are probably just saying it so that they don't get complained about to the manager, and there for, potentially, could get fired.

There are times when I want to tell them my day has been utter crap but like Brittany said they are trained to say it.
I always say good or not bad or great (really sarcastically lol) unless I'm at the bottle shop then I might say something like 'yeah crap but going to get better'
