My family got a deep fryer, and all afternoon yesterday we were experimenting with different types of food. My brother made onion rings and french fries. I made chicken-fried chicken for the whole family, and it turned out pretty well for a first-time effort. Although my mashed potatoes were a little too thin and the gravy was a little lumpy. But I was still really proud of myself.

Has anyone else used a deep fryer?

yeah, my dad can actually cook with a deep fryer and I have divorced parents. My dad made edible food in one!

They're fun but you won't get much healthy food out of one.

Try Tempura (Japanese battered vegetables. Needs very fresh oil though, and the right kind of batter), doughnuts, or pineapple fritters. The ultimate has to be the battered Mars Bar though.

I've only used one at work, but I hope to some day get one for home use. Fried food is so yummy. I would make spicy curly fries, eggplant parm, jalapeno poppers, and batter-fried tofu. None of those things can be done right without a deep fryer.

They're certainly a lot safer than heating the oil in a pan on the hob.

The thing I love about deep fryers is that it's really easy to tell when your food is ready; if it floats, it's done. The only thing to really keep in mind is to make sure the oil is hot enough when your food goes into the oil, otherwise it will turn greasy and disgusting. I could explain why, but all you need to know is that it does.

I've never used one.
My mother refuses to buy one and I don't blame her. Deep fried foods are so greasy and unhealthy. IMO, the deep fried food tastes like clumps of fat.

Maybe you shouldn't be eating clumps of fat either!

I tried tempura batter on onions and broccoli, and it turned out pretty well. I've heard about battering candy bars, but as I type this I'm not sure I could stomach it. :?
