Yes. My parents were extremely strict about manners. Actually, sometimes they were more neurotic than strict. Making me say, "I'm sorry" 100 times as a punishment, saying after each apology, "You don't sound like you mean it! Apologize to me now!" And this was usually for a violation such as accidentally letting my elbow brush against the table during dinner (no elbows on the table ever!).
So when I got into the "real world" people thought I was really strange for saying, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" at the slightest thing, mechanically saying "You're welcome!" and all that. But I've made a consistent effort to break those habits and replace them with more widely held codes of politeness. Now I probably seem somewhat normal in this regard.
So there is hope.
