Ever say, ''you're welcome'' as a reflex to ''thank you''?
I keep doing that and it feels like I'm doing some sort of social faux pas.
anyone else have this problem

Yes. My parents were extremely strict about manners. Actually, sometimes they were more neurotic than strict. Making me say, "I'm sorry" 100 times as a punishment, saying after each apology, "You don't sound like you mean it! Apologize to me now!" And this was usually for a violation such as accidentally letting my elbow brush against the table during dinner (no elbows on the table ever!).

So when I got into the "real world" people thought I was really strange for saying, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" at the slightest thing, mechanically saying "You're welcome!" and all that. But I've made a consistent effort to break those habits and replace them with more widely held codes of politeness. Now I probably seem somewhat normal in this regard.

So there is hope.

Aside from having my mouth washed out with soap for cussing and hit/spanked for other infractions. my family didn't focus heavily on manners. I have been making an effort to have better manners for the last 20 years or so. I wish I could quit cussing as effectively as I quit drinking and doping.
