Rush - A Farewell To Kings

When they turn the pages of History,
When these days have passed long ago,
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow?
We turned our face from the castles in the distance,
Eyes cast down on the path of least resistance -

Cities full of hatred, fear and lies,
Withered hopes and cruel tormented eyes,
Scheming demons dressed in kingly guise,
Beating down the multitudes and scoffing at the wise

Oh, hypocrites are slandering the sacred halls of Truth,
Aged nobles showering their bitterness on youth -
Oh, can't we find the minds that made us strong?
Can't we learn to feel what's right and what's wrong?

Cities full of hatred, fear and lies,
Withered hopes and cruel tormented eyes,
Scheming demons dressed in kingly guise,
Beating down the multitudes and scoffing at the wise

Oh, can't we raise our eyes and make a start?
Can't we find a knight to lead us closer to the heart?

Also from Rush, Beneath Between and Behind:

Oh, tenscore years ago,
Defeat the kingly foe,
A wondrous dream came into being,
Tame the trackless waste,
No virgin land left chaste,
All shining eyes, but never seeing

Beneath the noble bird,
Between the proudest words,
Behind the beauty, cracks appear;
Once with heads held high,
They sang out to the sky,
Why do their shadows bow in fear?

Oh, watch the cities rise,
Another ship arrives,
Earth's melting pot, and ever growing,
Watching dreams come true,
Inventing something new,
Earth's greatest minds, but never knowing

Beneath the noble bird,
Between the proudest words,
Behind the beauty, cracks appear;
Once with heads held high,
They sang out to the sky,
Why do their shadows bow in fear?

Swords replace the plow,
Facades are tarnished now,
The principles have been betrayed,
The dream's gone stale, but
Still hope remains
That history's debt won't be repaid

Beneath the noble bird,
Between the proudest words,
Behind the beauty, cracks appear;
Once with heads held high,
They sang out to the sky,
Why do their shadows bow in fear?

I love Rush! even though they don't seem too pro-socialist/leftist sometimes.

@ Bozewani: "First we take Manhattan" is one of those songs I often wondered what it's about. My best bet would be however that it is about jewish revenge for the holocaust. Remember that Leonard Cohen is jewish himself (the name Cohen gives that away I guess) and especially the lyrics about the line passing through the station seems a clear references to the jewish holocaust victims...

Disturbed - Enough

We don't want them, we want everything
We’ve stolen in this suffering
And we told them to want everything
But use caution in what you believe
And the haunted, deny everything
Controlling in this suffering
When they’re broken, and lost everything
They're so much easier to lead

Take their hope away
Take their life away
Leave them nothing left inside

When you’re own have died
When there's no more pride
When your soul is frozen
Is that enough
When your heart is broken
A thousand times
With every moment
Is that enough?

Without warning, we take everything
Undaunted in this suffering
The dark forces surround everything
Make it impossible to see

Take their hope away
Take their life away
Leave them nothing left inside

When you’re own have died
When there's no more pride
When your soul is frozen
Is that enough
When your heart is broken
A thousand times
With every moment
Is that enough?

Haven't they suffered enough, Haven't we suffered enough
Haven't they suffered enough, The Damage more than they can bare
Haven't they suffered enough, Haven't we suffered enough
Haven't they suffered enough, The Damage more than they can bare

Did they even have the reason why
Countless sons and daughters had to die
Can you even comprehend the pain
Tell me when your

Own have died
When there's no more pride
When your soul is frozen
Is that enough
When your heart is broken
A thousand times
With every moment
Is that enough?

When you’re own have died (have died)
When there's no more pride (no more pride)
When your soul is frozen
Is that enough (Is that enough)
When your heart is broken
A thousand times
With every moment
Is that enough?

"Holiday in Cambodia" and "California Uber Alles"
both by the Dead Kennedys.

I learned political science from them.

I was going to add this one today after listening to it on the train, so here it is:

"No W" by Ministry

If this is really living
Then why am I so unforgiving
Half the world is down the toilet
Half on its way

If I had a dollar for every time he hollers
Trust us with your hearts and minds
Or I'll make you pay

Trust me
Trust me

Ask me why you're feeling screwed
And I'll give you the answer
There's a Colon Dick & Bush
Justa hammerin' away

Ask me why you feel deceived
Stripped of all your liberties
It doesn't take a genius to explain
That today

Trust me
Trust me

"American Idiot" by Green Day

Don't want to be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind f**k America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the fa***t America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along to the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Don't want to be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's calling out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Sweet!

"Holiday" by Green Day

Say, hey!

Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (Hey!)
The shame
The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protester has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men (Hey!)
A gag, a plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

(Hey!)
(Say, hey!)

(3,4)

"The representative from California has the floor"

Sieg Heil to the president Gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause, just cause, because we're outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is our lives on holiday

"Annihilation" by A Perfect Circle

From dehumanization to arms production,
For the benefit of the nation or its destruction
Power, power, the law of the land,
Those living for death will die by their own hand,

Life's no ordeal if you come to terms,
Reject the system dictating the norms

From dehumanization to arms production,
To hasten the nation towards its destruction
Power, power, the law of the land,
Those living for death will die by their own hand,

Life's no ordeal if you come to terms,
Reject the system dictating the norms

From dehumanization to arms production,
To hasten the nation towards its destruction
Power, power, the law of the land,
Those living for death will die by their own hand,

Life's no ordeal if you come to terms,
Reject the system dictating the norms

From dehumanization to arms production,
To hasten this nation towards its destruction,

It's your choice, your choice, your choice, your choice,
Peace or annihilation

"Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums" by A Perfect Circle

Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window
Go back to sleep
Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a f**k about you, like I do.

Count the bodies like sheep
Count the bodies like sheep

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Count the bodies like sheep

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep

Go back to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
To the rhythm of the war drums

I’ll be the one to protect you from your enemies and all your demons
I'll be the one to protect you from a will to survive and a voice of reason
I'll be the one to protect you from your enemies and your choices son
They're one in the same, I must isolate you…
Isolate and save you from yourself …

"Fiddle And The Drum" by A Perfect Circle

And so once again,
My dear Johnny, my dear friend,
And so once again you are fighting us all,
And when I ask you why,
You raise your sticks and cry, and I fall,
Oh, my friend,
How did you come?,
To trade the fiddle for the drum,
You say I have turned,
Like the enemies you've earned,
But I can remember,
All the good things you are,
And so I ask you please,
Can I help you find the peace and the star?,
Oh, my friend,
What time is this?,
To trade the handshake for the fist

And so once again,
Oh, America my friend,
And so once again,
You are fighting us all,
And when we ask you why,
You raise your sticks and cry and we fall,
Oh, my friend,
How did you come,
To trade the fiddle for the drum

You say we have turned,
Like the enemies you've earned,
But we can remember,
All the good things you are,
And so we ask you please,
Can we help you find the peace and the star?,
Oh my friend,
We have all come,
To fear the beating of your drum
