can you play chess without the chessboard?

I've never really learned how to play chess, but if I did, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to do it.

I bet it would be pretty easy for most people here, considering the aspie visual thinking and high concentration.

is there anyone here who'd tried it?

Yep, chess is great almost meditation-like
when things are flowing really good

I enjoy chess, but am not outstanding at it. I can't see "strategies" as easily as some players. So I tend to do the tedious thing of checking lots and lots of moves in my mind to determine the best one.

I have played chess, I could be better if I realy tried but I actualy enjoy doing some of those crazy moves, it is fun to also throw a little bit of messing with your opponents mind. That includes not acting the way they expect When something happends, I like to try and think differently from others, yo could have a perfect formula but that would take a lot of the fun out. It is good comeing up with something on the spot and learning things the same way as through life, watching and makeing mistakes.

I need to get a good chessboard though, they are always so expensive.

Imagine how hard it is to concetrate when someone
tries to hit you in the head for 4 minutes inbetween
the chess playing it takes some real concetration
to think ahead in a chess game when fighting every 4
minutes

No, chess is not one of my aspie specialties. Yeah, I understand the rules and everything. But I can't use strategy. Even playing against an opponent that makes moves randomly, it is very hard to score a checkmate.

I don't even know how to play chess....

2 of my uncles always play chess without the chessboard on family meetings. they got so good at it that they basically shout the moves at each other and are done after 10 minutes. I've heard I have the same blank stare when I space out as they do when they "look" at the mind-chessboard :p

Never played chess, but played go. You could play that without the board but you would need to decide where the edges are and work out the length and height of 19 stones. On second thoughts no. Go has been adapted for different shaped boards boards. Boundaries are not necessary all the time.

I'm a decent chess player but I haven't played in a couple years. Never tried playing without a board. I can imagine it being possible though, after many hours of playing.

yeah, I can picture the board pretty easily but since I don't really know what the pieces look like I probably wouldn't be any good at it ;p

email chess is fun. I like the slow pace. Each player emails their move to their opponent (E2..E4 etc) and you either have the pieces set up on a board or use the computer. Vista comes with a free Chess game. You have to trust that the opponent doesn't cheat though and use a computer chess program to work out their moves. Pointless exercise though if someone does that. Anyone up for a slow game via pm? Just a few moves a day?

Not sure I can teach how to play chess via pm though. If you have got a chess program for your computer they can teach you the moves. Once you know the moves and rules it is really a game of strategy. There is probably somewhere on the internet that lists all of the moves and rules in an easy to digest form. e.g.
Pawn can move one or two squares forward for its first move
Rook (castle) can move horizontally and vertically anywhere on the board provided no other piece is in the way.
Bishop can move diagonally provided nothing is in the way
Knight... best to look at a picture better than a description - it is also the only piece that can 'jump' over other pieces.
The Queen has the same moves as both a rook and a bishop
The King can move to any of the eight squares next to it.
There are other rules such as pawns taking 'en-passant' but I suggest you find these on the Internet - I'm sure they are explained better than I can and probably with pictures too.
