Synopsis: On August 7, 2005, Marc Cohn and his band were in their van headed back to their hotel after playing a show at the Denver Botanic Gardens. As they drove down the street, they were confronted by an armed man who, in an attempt to carjack them, shot into the vehicle. The vehicle sped away and the shooter, who subsequently commandeered another vehicle, was later caught and arrested. Marc was shot in the left temple, but the bullet lodged in the bit of soft tissue above his eye and did not penetrate his skull. Doctors were able to remove the bullet, and he was released the next day.

Eyewitness Account:
Shane Fontayne, riding in the van, reported the incident as follows in his online journal:

Quote:
Now when our attention came back to the street ahead, a man had stepped out in front of the van. My memory doesn’t recall if we stopped to avoid hitting him, but [tour manager] Tom [who was driving] says we kept moving. What I do recall is seeing him stand in front of us, pointing towards us. In what can only have been a couple of seconds, we realized that he was holding a gun and I clearly saw the look in his eyes of an intent that left no doubt in my mind. I knew for certain that he was going to shoot.

Marc yelled, "Duck!" and I got my head down below the level of the seat. Simultaneously I heard the sound of the gun being fired and the crashing of glass around us. "Oh, my God!", someone or all of us exclaimed. Then I heard someone say, "I’ve been hit!" I thought it was Tom. The van seemed to be careening out of control and I was sitting up again and imploring Jay and Marc to grab the wheel or the brake or both. I felt certain that we would crash as we tore down the street away from the shooter.

Shane also reported:

Quote:
We now saw that there was a bullet hole in the windshield at the edge of the driver’s side, where the windshield meets the metal frame about a third of the way up, and the window of the sliding door on the passenger side was completely shot out.

My Question: News and eyewitness reports all indicate that there was only one shot, and we KNOW where that bullet went. So how did the PASSENGER SIDE window get broken?

This has been puzzling me for quite some time. Any sleuths out there with theories?

(Note: There is a photo of the bullet hole in the windshield in Shane’s online diary.)

maybe nobody bothered to report the second shot because they were focusing on the first one?

^^

Yeah, I thought about that, but there's only one bullet hole, and the vehicle was moving at the time the shooting occurred. Although I guess it wouldn't be impossible for two shots to go through the same hole, it seems highly improbable.

I was talking about this to a couple of NT friends last night, ane one of them said that it might have been a shard of flying glass that struck the back window (the trajectory seems right), or perhaps the bullet split into more than one piece after being fired.

He said, basically, "who knows"? and shrugged it off.

I, however, still have the question rattling around in my brain.

Maybe the answer is for me to just stop obsessing about it, but, you know how it is . . .
