I want it! Every time I've got a computer it either:
A: Doesn't have it. Or
B: It's preinstalled but wants to charge me for it anyway!

Download Open Office. It's free, it's as good as MS Office and it will even read Microsofts file formats.

Microsoft Word is rubbish... don't use it.

The future of word processing is with the open document format ODF, though all of the options listed below save in Office 97 format too - and I think they're all about to get Microsoft's new OOXML format as well.

There are three free ways to get it (and perhaps more if other people can think of some).

Open Office
http://openoffice.org-suite.com
This is the original/oldest of the three suites here (I'm ignoring Star Office - because I'm not sure if it's still being developed). As such, it has years of support, testing and documentation.

IBM Lotus Symphony
http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.nsf/home
This is based on the OpenOffice code but includes support from IBM - so it's better for businesses. It can save in PDF as well.

Google Docs
http://docs.google.com/
This is entirely web based it is fast and suitable for most documents. Sure, it doesn't have all those features like Table of Contents but if you're not using them, then it's great. It also has the added bonuses of being able to share online.
1. You can access the app and the documents from any computer on the internet.
2. You can add people's names to the document as editors or readers - for collaboration.

All three options are good - you can try them all - or not.

Regardless, give MS word the flick... you'll find that many businesses are starting to do it.

FYI, Open Office is an outgrowth of StarOffice. Star Office is still available, but you have to pay for it, and it is essentially a Deluxe version of Open Office with more fonts, and I believe so clip art and stock photos bundled in.

Google Docs is not without its shortcomings, but after using it for a group project last semester, I rather like the idea.
