I have always liked the smell of new clothes. I would spend my time sniffing them as a kid whenever I got new ones for school.

Right now I have on a new shirt that has Betty Boop on it with hearts and it has sleeves and a vest. It looks like it's two piece but it's only one. It also has a hood and pockets. I enjoy sniffing it as I wear it.

I still sniff my clothes. In fact, I got a new scarf the other day, and I sniffed that baby until my nose hurt. They don't have to be new though, I like the smell of clothes anytime.

I don't go all out snorting my clothing, but I do enjoy the smell of a brand new article of clothing.

Beats a stinky one any day in my book.

NO ! ! Definitely NOT ! !!

Most new clothes are doused with formaldehyde, which I'm terribly allergic to. The Missus picks out clothes for me at the store, and brings them home for me to approve. I can't go into a clothing department, it's like walking into a fog of insecticide.

I'm with Kilroy- I don't normally like/trust new clothing until I wash it myself. You just never know who tried it on before.
However, I love the feel/smell of new fabric off the bolt. It makes my pink parts tingle......

kidding....

I'm not mad about the smell of new clothes- it depends on the fabric. I agree with what others have said about formaldyhyde/incecticide smells. I'm more a fan of tropical-scented fabric softner.

That feel and smell of new fabric off the bolt is probably the "sizing" chemicals to supposedly make it easier to work with.

I wash fabrics before I work with them not only to deal with possible shrinkage but also because I seem to be allergic to those sizing chemicals. I could wear gloves while I sew but I'd still sneeze from the stink.

Trying on new clothing before washing them always makes me break out in hives in addition to sneezing.

Did you all know that smelling is the quickest way to put a chemical into one's blood system short of injecting it with a needle?
If you smell something, its chemicals you smell and they go right into your blood when the air you breathed reaches your lungs.
No digestion is necessary.

"Tropical-scented" anything can be just as chemically toxic.

Read the ingredients of fabric softener. Its scary.

Yes, there is plenty of starch and sizing in new fabric. And for my kind of quilting new fabric has the kind of "hand" that I need to make my projects work. Since none of my art quilts get washed I don't worry about shrinkage.

I think that is also why I enjoy ironing: I love freshly pressed and starched shirts.

I once took a class taught at a teacher's house.
I was the first to arrive one morning and caught her lighting incense.

"Why are you burning incense?" I asked.

Her reply was that she'd just finished breakfast and her whole house smelled like coffee, bacon, eggs and oatmeal.

My next question was "what is wrong with that?".
