My autistic nephew put tape on my favoritest CRT screen (a large 18" industrial ViewSonic CRT w/ amazing contrast & a great DPI so I keep it at 1400x1050), & I, idiotically, cleaned it off with 70% alcohol.

So, that left me with a nice chunk of the anti-glare/anti-rad/anti-static coating (that's bonded with the glass) missing. In the end I tore the rest of the coating off with some more rubbing alcohol & paint thinner to even it out. (well, I'm not exactly FINISHED, I have another 10-20% to go...)

So my question is, Should I be concerned about UV radiation? Everywhere I go opinions on CRT UV are mixed. I just need to know if I should be concerned whether my face will tan from it or not, or even worse, skin cancer.

I mean an external 18" anti-glare/anti-rad screen would be over $50 new, so I really need to know this...

Never heard of UV being an issue before...and my CRTs were never quite as fancy as yours sounds, but I was way far from being tan ;)

I doubt it. The thickest portion of glass on the whole tube is the screen. Back in the day, we decided to break a CRT (in a practically empty dumpster...using chunks of concrete), and it took us half an hour to do it. Had to use head-sized chunks for that.

Mainly the electron gun is shooting electrons at the phosphors on the inside of the screen. It has to go through that glass (which usually stops UV) to get to your eyes.

If it's a problem, you can always get a flat-panel display. Dell makes some fairly good, cheap ones (I should know, I have to support them at work)

It explains my great tan! ;)

I've never heard of it being an issue. You won't be exposed to the radiation... I can't imagine how rubbing alcohol would remove that kind of coating either.

The keyword was 70% alcohol; it'll eat through many many things! Try pouring it on Grandma's 78RPM records! :P

I clean my computer screen with the same stuff, but it's an LCD monitor.
