Good for you having a go at it, I left it until I was 32 to try the OS thing, and being a tall person, it only took one trip (to Vietnam) for me to realise I can't do 'cattle class'. That's when I realised I would never see Europe or the Americas. Just too long a flight and too cramped. Sometimes it's better to just do it and find that out later. Also in those days you could smoke on airplanes, so guess what we got in economy class? a French football team chainsmoking gitanes. ugh, I'm a smoker but ugh, gitanes.

What was the purpose of the trip, is it just recreational or do you have family there?

Mostly recreational, but my mother had to do a presentation or a lecture or something at Surrey Uni at Guildford, and my cousin's husband has family back in Scotland, and friends in Brighton.

Not surprising you bumped into someone from Somalia as soon as you got here. In many parts of the country you'd think you were in Mogadishu. Did you actually meet any real English people?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading about the remainder of your visit. Were you able to visit the west of England, at all?

Good show. I only wish I had the funds for The Missus and I to visit Oz. I hope you enjoyed your time here, and it wasn't all disappointing. (I would have been glad to point out David Gilmour's house-boat on the Thames to you. And of course, some colourful pubs.)

I have only flown twice in my life...Hard lesson learned if I am going to stick myself in a tube full of
people, it is best to spend the extra shekels and go first class. Ear plugs and Bonine® are a must
and I always get window seat so I can zone-out. I have yet to travel abroad but I might get a passport soon so I can travel to UK and meet Lau, Lemon and a few others from the Dino Cafe at an Aut-Scape
or some other such venue.

By the way.....

In answer to your first question: yes. Although I do not think much of the way you led up to it.

In answer to your second question, if you count Bath and the Cotswolds, as well as Salisbury Plain, yes.

A good plane travel tip for aspies is to spend a lot of time in the toilet! There's a lot more space in there than in the average economy seat and the air is a lot fresher than in the cabin. Also you are isolated from the cramped and cranky herd out there.

Except when the herd want relief from their bowel or bladder, or stewardesses want to spray air freshener into the toilet.

So did you start saying "Gordon's Alive ! !! !" or "Fly my hawkmen, Fly!! !!" at the car hire place...

Uh, no, and that was the hotel owner, the Greek, I was talking about.

I picked up a stomach bug in my last few days of the trip and i had to be near or on a toilet for long periods of time, so that's how I happened to end up using it as my 'seat' for the flight. there's more than one toilet on a plane anyway. I came out occasionally and just stood there looking green. Didn't see much of the steward/esses, I'm sure they've got better things to do than hang around in cattle class.

Which airline did you use? I used Cathay Pacific.

um for that leg of the flight I spent in the toilet, it was on the way back from Singapore (stopover) so I think it was Thai airways, yep pretty sure. We had missed the flight connection we were supposed to get in Singapore due to weather, so I think they got us on to the next flight into east coast Australia which was Thai. There were different carriers at each stage, the flight from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City is a very small plane and I can't even remember the 'brand', if there even was one, it may have been unbranded. I think it would only seat about 20 people and it was half empty. In 1992 there wasn't much tourism to Vietnam.

so when do we get the next installment?

Welcome back, Quatermass! :D

I don't usually enjoy reading about people's travels, but your writing is extremely entertaining. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
