This article says that nerds are not, in fact getting ahead. (Allegedly, having three friends is more valuable than going to college.)

A lot of people don't realize that nerds are slowly consuming human society as a whole. Most of the economy is dependent on the things nerds buy. People are statring to embrace the nerd styles, personalities. They're loving nerds moreso than ever as I see it. I may have AS but that thought scares the s**t outta me.

Yeah, I'd say "geek" culture, videogames, general internet stuff, other things like that, although it's just consumerism as opposed to to real interest, and "real" nerds are left just as socially outcast.
