Last weekend my boyfriend cooked salmon for dinner. I ate a large piece and a few hours later my eyes and lips swelled up a lot. I looked up fish allergy symptoms on the internet and saw that face swelling was listed. I haven't eaten much seafood in my life, but I'm sure this is not the first time I've eaten salmon and I've never had any reactions to it before. I suppose it's possible that I just had never eaten salmon in such a large portion before and have always been allergic. On the other hand, is it possible to develop a food allergy later in life? Anyone have any similar experiences?

It is possible to develop a food allergy later in life. It might not have even been the salmon you were allergic to... it could have been one of the ingredients in the sauce on it, assuming it wasn't plain. Your best bet would be to go to a clinic and ask for an allergy test and tell them you think you had a reaction to some salmon, and they can confirm it or try to find out what else it is.

You can develop allergies at any time in life. When I was 30, I became allergic to poultry. Now I have to read labels on all lunch meats, hot dogs, pizza, and even sausage. At least they don't put fish in lots of foods.
