I've always been annoyed by this. I had a cooking teacher in high school who told us to say "yes", rather than "yeah". However she herself said "yeah" when talking to the students. Really, what's the issue? What's wrong with saying "yeah"? Anyone else annoyed with this?

If someone tells me not to say/use a word, I'm more likely to use/keep using it...

Apparently, due to its lack of formality, it is considered disrespectful. Students are supposed to act more formally towards their teachers and other authority figures.

The teacher can say "Yeah" to the students because they are 'below' her, authority-wise. No formality or respect is required.

I had a teacher what was the same way. He would never allow "yeah".

Argue that it's in the dictionary and is a perfectly cromulant word.

If I had thought of it at the time, I would have suggested that my teacher go by Timothy instead of Tim if he's going to have a stick up his butt about yeah and yes

I had a teacher who wouldn't allow "aye" as a substitute for yes. I imagine she felt that dialect was a mark of poor education and so had to be eliminated ( ).

I didn't have problems like this as a kid. I didn't talk age appropriate colloquial slang unlike every other kid.

I was the other way round actually.

Telling people to not say stuff like 'yeah' and 'huh' haha

I only use "yes" when I'm in a situation where I need/want to be respected.

I've never had this problem, at least I can't remember having this problem.

I don't see why "yeah" shouldn't be allowed though.

Because "it ain't correct to speak poorly and uneducated." Have you ever seen the film, "My Fair Lady" with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison? "Ain't" is another word that is frowned upon when used.
