By the way, meter el zueco is a less often used and a bit more humorous synonym of meter la pata, ‘to mess up’. Literally, the latter means ‘to put one’s leg in’, implying a dirty place the leg is hard to pull from, like a big pool of mud. It should be noted that, other than in set phrases like this, the word pata is normally only used to refer to a leg belonging to a non-human animal or an inanimate object, like a table or a chair, and it can be offensive if used to mean a human leg—use pierna instead. If the slip-up being described as meter la pata is a speech act, the phrase can be translated as to put one’s foot in one’s mouth.
