I've been on a couple of sites for a while, and each one has a different purpose.

Livemocha is a site where you can learn several different languages at your own pace. It's all free and you can even chat with someone who speaks a language you're learning as well as make friends with people who speak those languages.

sharedtalk is a site that is more or less used for chatting with people who speak a language you want to learn and in return, you help them with their English. You can also get in touch with people from msn chats and pen pals.

Sounds interesting. I want to learn a Middle Eastern language, be it Hebrew, Arabic or Turkish. Did you find the sites any useful? Which of both would you recommend?

Between those two, the only one I can recommend is sharedtalk.

I adore memrise because A. It's free and you never need to pay or subscribe to anything B. The courses are high quality and you can use any amount you want at any time and C. It's made by native or fluent speakers.

They also have history, geography,, trivia and science pages. I am infatuated with this site... It's amazing.

it is more of an online encyclopedia than a site to take courses but nevertheless i have found it VERY useful and chock full of interesting info and neat factoids. i'm a fan of writing systems so this is a plus.

probably a no brainer but: http://www.omniglot.com/
