I was wondering if women commonly do this? See ever since I started working at a supermarket a year ago, I learned how to talk in a higher pitch to customers. Even though I have left the job 2 months ago and I am doing an internship right now where I do not have to deal with customers, I still find myself raising my pitch subconsciously to co-workers. But when I'm talking to friends/family, my pitch drops. I'm guessing this is something that women commonly do? I dont know, I've never really been one to put on fake pleasant fasades.

As I get progressively more stressed out my pitch raises, my volume raises and the rapidity of my speech quickens. I'm not sure if this is a gender thing though.

I was just mainly wondering because normally women have higher more feminized voices. Like if you call up a doctors office and the secretary answers, she might talk in a high, professional, pleasant voice. For me its like, pitch raises, stable eye contact, more smiling when I talk to people. I've started training myself to do that automatically when someone approaches me.

I have noticed that I switch to smoother, higher pitch, more feminine voice when I intend to be especially polite to strangers. And also the opposite that I make a low voice when I try to get rid of some annoying person. Both sides noticeably different from my normal, talk-to-close-people voice. Stupid subconcious habit because I actually would like to use more male-like voice and never show any femininty there. From recordings I have found out that my normal voice is like one of a 10 year old girl :D so pretty bad for my androgynous self-image and the polite pitch must be just horrible. :x

I have a "customer service voice" that is higher pitched than how I speak outside of work.
