Going to the hair salon is like twice or three times a year "chore" that I despise.......
I don't mind the shampoo. But I don't like when they give me a massage. I feel opposite of relaxed lol
As others mentioned, I dont really like small talk either but I also sort of understand from their point of view so I try to engage in the conversation as much as I can. Since I have a cartilage piercing, I am horrified of scissors getting anywhere near by because my regular hair dresser always pulls my piercing despite me telling her prior. It's also quite expensive. Since I have long hair I generally spend about $60 per visit. 8O

I got two cartilage piercings (one in each ear) and three others on each lobe and I always take them out before getting a hair cut. Put them in a little pillbox I have in my purse and put the earrings back in later. Maybe this will help. I don't mind getting my hair done, this thread reminded me that it's been a few months since my last one and time to get it cut again. I just let the hairdressers concentrate on their work rather than chatting to them. I tell them Im not really a chatty type and I think they respect my honesty.

wow i never thought about taking off my piercings
thanks!! !

I was surprised to read this thread because i never realised it could be related to aspieness.
well even i hate going to the parlour
the same small talk infact the parlour i went too the girl stopped showing interest in cutting my hair
she would just not get up when i entered the parlour after lot of reluctance she would cut my hair
i didnt tip her because already the charges were quite high for trimming the hair

since i was too comfortable visiting parlours i used to ask my hubby to cut off my hair
last time i just took a pair of scissors and cut of my hair on my own

Now if I could only figure my way out of visits to the dentist I'd be set.

^^^ So much this!! ! I'm pretty lucky in that, at my salon, the stylists don't like to chat so much, in fact, one time one of the girls told me, "Ok, when I'm really in the zone I'm quiet, but you want that so I can focus on your hair. " Best haircut EVAR.

The worst thing for me about haircuts is the uncertainty. It's the fact that, since I'm not cutting my own hair, I have to give up that locus of control. Maintaining faith that this person will do me right and I won't walk out of there with a goofy mohawk or funny tufty poodle hair just really sets my nerves on edge through the whole process. :afro:

The sad thing is that my hair is so thin and fragile, I don't even have the K.I.S.S. option of growing it long into a ponytail like some of you girls do. :(

I'd still go to the salon twice a month though if it would get me out of dentist visits. Haircuts > paying out the nose for the privilege/torture of drills and poky bits stuck in your gums any day.

I haven't had a problem getting my hair done but belong to a local autism forum, and a lot of parents on there talk about their kids having problems with hair cuts. I went somewhere that gave you a neck massage before the hair cut and I thought the massage hurt.

I haven't been to a salon since my 40th birthday in 2000. I've been cutting my own hair since then. Granted it's not much of a style -- I just cut the back off a few inches just to get the dead ends off. My hair is wavy, so it can hide any mistakes I make. I don't like salons because of the money it costs, the obsessing over looks all the time that women seem to do, and I don't like being "fiddled with". All the touching -- and I'm aware that it's all in the job -- makes me uncomfortable.

My hair is straight but a bit puffy Mexican-style. I get it layered and it turns into big curls. I get a hair cut once a year and wear it past my shoulders. I like doing high pony tails with a bump thing in the front(In style in my area),putting bows on and mostlyleaving my hair down and natural with lots of volume.

I do not mind it too much and yes it can be expensive that is true. My complaint is when the hairdresser does what he or she wants with my hair despite my explicit request for a certain color or cut. My current hairdresser does listen to my requests regarding type of cut and color so I am happy.

I don't mind it so much....but I go to a small salon, so its not very noisy at all.
I also have to take my glasses off, which reduces me to a blind person and seeing all out of focus makes me dizzy, so i tend to close my eyes, which makes my hairdresser not want to spoil my relaxing moment.

Granted, this requires trust, but I get special curly hair cuts by Ouidad stylists, so that I can fuss as little as possible later on, so generally they know better then I do.

So I close my eyes and that avoids -some- of the chit chat

My mother used to cut my hair, but she has now retired and moved to a different country so she is no longer available to do it.
I wasn't sure what to do then, so I just did not get a haircut. After about a year my hair was a mess and I always had a ponytail in to keep it out of my eyes.

Anyway, I did go to a nearby hairdresser, convinced them to not use any sprays, lotions or other rubbish - just a cut.
It's not great, but I'm always very pleased when my hair is comfy and curly again. (it gets wavy curls when it's shorter)

I hate sitting in front of a mirror for so long, so I often close my eyes. I don't have a problem with the small talk, the hairdresser doesn't seem to want to talk to me apart from a few questions - but they are very friendly and do give me a cup of tea.

I now also have a hairwash before cutting because I like it when people scratch or massage my scalp.

I go about once every three/four months.

I've only been to a hairdresser a couple of times in my life (I'm 56), and both times the hairdressers were people I knew - one a good friend of my sister's from high school, the other someone I knew from church. In both instances the small talk and little social niceties got to me.

I enjoyed the hair washing part, though. To me that was a luxury. The rest not so much!

Fortunately I wear my hair long, so it's not that big a deal to just have my husband trim it for me, and I can do my bangs. I've never felt a need to color it.
