So, not to be too personal or graphic, but I have thick hair and I'm thinking of shaving/waxing. Please advise me ladies!! If you don't want to reveal your intimate regime on the board please PM me.

the best thing I have found is that little waterproof razor shaver from Schick called the Trimstyle.

http://www.quattroforwomen.com/product_trimstyle.php

this trims what you want to keep longer and efficently shaves off what you don't want there. Since waxing requires the hair to be removed to be very short, this facillitates getting it waxed if shaving it off lets you know that is something that feels right for you, and then you are all prepped up for waxing.

Waxing not only hurts, but is a bit traumatic, let alone expensive. See if you like the results by splurging on the Trimstyle, just remember to pick up a cartridge of the razor blades for it when you get the razor/shaver.

:D I'm no lady, but Remington makes a personal shaver kit that's handy for tight spots and pretty gentle about not nicking in tight corners and uneven areas. Several different attachments for specific functions or customized grooming. Around twenty bucks, at fine retailers everywhere. Every home should have one.

I normally would not recommend Remington shavers for facial hair (Norelco's much better), but this little device is pretty handy.

BE CAREFUL!! !
Not only did I mangle myself the one and only time I tried this, but I also gave myself a rash. AND hair itches like CRAZY growing back. Even before it would be long enough to treat again in any way.
Gah I will never again do this. !

I go through phases. Bald makes sex SO sensitive, so it depends on if you like that or not. I have never had the courage to get it waxed.. I tried myself right at the top of where the hair starts, and it hurt so much I avoided it, so I shave, but only every few days, as my skin is easily irritated. So sometimes I let it grow, but groom it a bit so I don't look like a 70's throwback! :D A shorter razor is probably best for down there, as there are so many nooks and crannies. You can get razors especially for the bikini line, and they usually have a strip of moisturiser or aloe to soothe the skin whilst shaving.

LadyMacbeth, I must tell you I thought your avatar was you for at least a couple years, now. I mentioned to Lau and he said I was being silly because I didn't recognize Hermione Granger. Then he had to tell me who she was. . . :D well, not quite, but still. But that's ok, Hermione Granger could only hope to be a better writer. I will always think of you when reminded of her.

I agree about soothing the skin btw. Shaving is definitely exfoliating. . I find the less friction on the skin the better, broad swipes with a with sharp blades though a thin but even layer of moisturizing shaving cream, thoroughly cleaning the blade each swath taken. And even if you need hot water to clean the blade, run the cold water on it until it is completely cold before you take it over your skin again, it will really defuse any rash you may have previously encountered. Pat always when drying, never rub and follow with the aloe vera and walk around in a towel or pareo just letting it all soak in and feeling the breeze.

Thanks everyone :)

A few years back I used hair removal cream and then shaved the excess and on another occasion my boyfriend shaved it for me. It took forever though as I have thick, coarse hair but I really liked how it felt. Not that keen on how it looked though, compared to how it naturally looks. It did itch though and that's what I'm worried about - that and slipping and cuting myself - I guess I don't feel as adventurous as I was back then! I don't think I'll try wax, everyone says it's very painful and, well, I can imagine!

I've sometimes wondered about laser hair removal. Permanent, which is the joy of it.
But the cost and possible pain are major obstacles to me.

try washing the area with an exfoliating mit ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BATH-GLOVES-GLOVE ... 45ee7823ea ) between shaves as it prevents ingrowing hairs and cuts down on itching :D

And for that, I have updated my ugly mug on the "Post a Pic" thread, just for you! :P

My contribution to this thread is DONT wax, it hurts really bad and the pain does not get better the more often you do it. As far as shaving goes, you could trim first then shave. If you can get your hands on Eucalyptus oil that will help shave closer and get rid of any irritation (if you have sensitive skin) that shaving might cause.

Well, I'm going to be the voice of support for waxing. Love it. Absolutely love it. Of course it is uncomfortable the first time, but I took a tylenol+codeine on visit #1, ever. And for me, it certainly wasn't as uncomfortable as a lot of people say. Go to someone who has been doing this for years, they know how to do it right. And I trimmed down to 1/2".

I sometimes do extended bikini, and also a full wax (bye bye everything!) but I always leave a "landing strip". I love it, I iniitally did it when I was first dating Mr. Rath. I'd been married previously for a long time and I just felt I needed a confidence booster. But I found that he (honestly) probably could care less. I'm sure he enjoys it but finally: naked woman is naked woman, woohoo!! So, ultimately I found I really do it for myself - I like the feeling of it. It's clean and as someone else posted, it does heighten sensitivity.

I use (brace yourself everyone - most people cringe when they hear this) an epilator. I dunno - it doesn't hurt that much for me, and I find the benefits make it worthwhile. And by "benefits", I just mean that it feels... tidier. And I like things to be tidy and organised. I think that's the main appeal for me!!

Of course, if you have very thick hair this would be pretty painful at first. I would recommend getting your bikini line waxed to see what you think of the pain level, and if you're okay with it, then you can try more... extreme versions. :) Also, if you're just getting your bikini line tidied up, you can leave your knickers on and they just hold the edges aside - if you're nervous about being naked in front of a stranger. Do go to a nice place, though - and make sure they DO NOT double-dip the little wooden spatulas in the wax!! !

I use an epilator too.. but only for my legs and arms (occasionally.. I just like the feel of smoothness), but I haven't yet plucked (hah, pun) up the courage to do it in more southerly regions. Maybe one day. I find it better than waxing because you don't get residue. Or sore skin. It's only the follicles that are sensitive afterwards.

ah,yes. . . my first epilator, I saved up for months, and plunked down $120. in 1986 USD for the privilege of yanking my thick pelt of hair on my legs out by the roots. Excruciating - no other word for it. Yet I faithfully continued for months, grimly determined to take out every offending follicle. Like so many other self improvement projects, one day I just couldn't take it anymore and I must have stopped doing it regularly and only did it now and then.

My second epilator was $2.50 1998 USD I got in pristine condition at a garage sale, from a woman that promised that she used it only once and after the first pass, she put it back into the carrying bag and vowed to never use it again. This time, I used it only a few days after shaving and it was much different feeling to rip out quarter of an inch hair than longer hair that didn't necessarily remove at the first or second or third pass, but only feel the yank.

~sigh~

Now I have much less hair on my legs than I did when younger, from use of the epilator and at the risk of giving too much information (TMI) I only use it on my neck and chin.

But I will leave my adventures with electrolysis for another post.

I used to epilate and wax my legs a lot, but I find that it just gave me a lot of ingrown hairs, nomatter how much I exfoliated in the shower. I'm tempted to try it again to experiment on whether things have changed post-adolescence, but it would be painful, and probably for naught.

Personally, I use an old guy's electric razor (one of my Dad's cast-offs that I managed to nab for the purpose). I've always found it works perfectly for my legs and down there, though when you get closer I generally find that manual (cheap, bog standard 2 blade ones, my Mum always told me that the women's ones were overpriced, and basically the same thing) works better and doesn't cut/bite where you definitely don't want to be cut/bite! (Unless you're into that kind of thing.. :P)

I find the same rule applies to armpits. Electric razors are a godsend for all the flat areas of your body, but don't go anywhere near a crevice or dip with them, euphemistic or otherwise..
