I'm just wondering if I'm alone in this or not, I get MUCH worse about 4 days before my period starts, I'm far more likely to have a meltdown, I can't seem to organise myself, and I'm completely at the whim of my emotions, which seem to become far more intense in all ways (sad/angry/happy)

Paradoxically, during ovulation, I seem to be more in control, and far less obviously AS, I can basically pass as normal.....

Is this common?

Not for me; my period doesn't change much about my personality. Whether my sensory issues make my cramps worse than they ought to be is still anybody's guess, though. I know I have weird pain perception as it is, either hyper or hyposensitive depending on the type of injury. I definitely get put out of commission for about six hours at the start, and occasionally thereafter, during my period though; it gets to the point that I can't stand up because I start passing out or throwing up thanks to the pain, which is utterly annoying. So if it's connected to the sensory issues, this would be a definite example of "hypersensitive".

Birth control pills helped some, but after they made my blood pressure go up, I stopped taking them. Thankfully, some part of the improvement has stuck around, even though it's been six months now.

It makes me more meltdown-prone, and my sensory issues get worse. It's a pain in the rear that I could really do without.

I did have PMDD for two years (severe pms) thanks to birth control pills. But after I got on and off medication for them I seem to have normal pms now.. I usually get more stressed and down on myself, and my meltdowns happen more frequently. Except this month I seem to be just the opposite. I think it was because I had a lot of stress before I started having pms symptoms.

Not that I've noticed. I'm more concerned w/ making sure I don't develop the PMS type symptoms my mother used to get...

I get really crazy. My emotions go completely haywire. One does NOT want to be around me during this time. I get way more paranoid and one minute I'm laughing hysterically and the next I'm so angry I want to gut somebody. I can't wait till' this craziness ends. I've enough troubles as it is.

I'm sure that it's normal for menstrual cycles to temporarily worsen issues that you already have...like if you have depressed, you might get more depressed around that time because when you have your period it's not a happy time anyway. The only thing I notice with me is that I stim more. I think it's because of the extreme pain that I experience. Pain killers don't help so I guess stimming is like a natural pain reliever for me at that time of the month. When I don't have it I hardly stim at all.

I am more prone to meltdowns, sensory overload and racing thoughts during pms. I have more trouble separating from my special interest as well.

You're not alone at all...

I get alot more sensitive to touch, noise, taste, smells and emotions around 7 days before most of my periods. I also get quite weepy, angry, lethargic, moody and irritable. I don't know how my poor husband puts up with me.

I have also noticed that I struggle more at work during this time. I will be less tolerant, more tired and am more prone to making mistakes than I would normally because I lose focus.

Years ago I made quite a horrible mistake on some business cards and I got called into the bosses office for a slap on the wrist. I told my boss at the time that I'd made the mistake because it was that time of the month.. lol. Obviously that excuse didn't go down so well so I keep this fact to myself these days.

Should this not be in the Women's Discussion?
Unless you do not mind men seeing it.
I see hormones as a bit of a design flaw.
They do crazy stuff.

I agree. I don't think my period makes my autism worse. It only causes the problems that women typically experience, and since I'm already vulnerable to begin with, it seems to make things worse.

I find that the 4 days before my period, is when I have all my meltdowns. It's not fun, at all.

I am noticeably more restless and eat more about a week before. Straight back to normal as soon as my period starts! The same happens whether or not I am on the pill. I feel most cheery the week after.
