One of hallmarks of Aspergers is supposed to be lack of interest in appearance, but one of my special interests has always been makeup and nail polish. From a very young age, about 12 or so, the colors, smell, textures, packaging, and application of makeup has always intrigued me. I used to hoarde it and wear so much it look me hours to put it on in the morning. I have scaled back to a socially acceptable appreciation and application of it, but I still love the routine of putting it on, and also the sensory and visual aspects of it. I also love shopping for it and reading blogs and books about it.
However, I don't wear it in order to look attractive or attract men, and I don't care much for fashion (I seriously wear the same thing everyday and it's usually black and unsexy) Does anyone else share the same interest or feelings about makeup?

I drew my eyebrows on with a Sharpie for awhile, after my favorite brow pencil was discontinued.

When I was little I really had a thing for lipstick which I've never set aside. My sister used to think I'd worn so much lipstick over the years that my lips were stained a deep red color. Only as an adult did she realize they're just kind of a dark color.

I love make up but am very particular about how it looks on so that it doesn't look clownish, high school-y, etc. I have a pretty nice collection of Bare Essentials make up and over the last year really got into Korres, a natural cosmetics company in Greece. I really dig white eyeliner and have a very specific way I like to put on lip color which is a three step process. I like it, it's fun. I like the creamy texture of lipstick and the powdery silkiness of mineral makeup. :)

Oh yeah, and I horded lipstick, too. I mostly stole it from my grandmother and had a collection of maybe 15 different types that I kept hidden under the bed.

Children.

The criteria in the DSM are for diagnosing AS in children.

Adults with AS are somewhat different.

I'm a guy, so makeup is of no interest, but I do work out every day because I care about my appearance. Chicks don't dig slobs. :P

Okay, Emo chicks do, but they're too young for me anyway...

i've always loved it too. would use markers on my barbie dolls to add more makeup (but then i also coloured their hair blue and pink with food colour lol), and by the time i was 12 i wore it all the time... and put it on everyone else who would sit still!

as an adult, i stopped wearing it very much becasue i was severely depressed and had low self esteem. i know that for other people this is not an indicator of their self-esteem, but for me it was; i didn't wear makeup unless i thought i was worth it. now i wear it again, and i have a lot of fun with it.

i always considered it to be like using paint, but on skin.

Oh my goodness, don't get me started on Bare Escentuals...glad to know you like it too because it's current makeup obsession. They should pay me for singing its praises and persuading people to try it. I love going into their store or Sephora and just playing with different colors and textures of makeup, and then walking out of the store with swatches all over the back of my hand and arms. I've heard good things about Korres too, but currently afraid to branch out from my tried-and true favorites, mostly for money reasons :)

Yep, never used Sharpies on my face but definitely used them on my dolls' faces. It would drive my mom crazy but I liked them better that way!
I know what you mean about the connection between makeup and self-esteem. You'd think if someone was feeling insecure they would wear more makeup, but for me it's the opposite. When I am feeling insecure I totally neglect my appearance. When I am having a good day, I take care of myself..but in general the act of putting on makeup makes me feel better either way. It totally is like painting on the skin!

I can't stand the feel of foundation or lipstick- will never ever wear it- but I LOVE eye makeup! And nailpolish! I get realy drawn to bright colors. I can spend hours looking through different colors of eyeshadow and nailpolish. I have loads of sparkly colors that I like to wear :) The brighter the better.

I've never worn makeup and I'm embarrassed to say that I don't really know how to use it. My mom doesn't wear makeup either and I don't really have other women in my life so I never learned how. Sometimes I think I'd like to try it, but it seems like too much of a hassle and I think it would feel and look weird.

When I was in musical theatre in high school, we were expected to put on our own makeup for the production and I was too embarrassed to ask for help. I just kind of watched everyone and pretended like I knew what I was doing. No one said anything so I guess it was fine (although I was largely overlooked by them in general so maybe no one even noticed).

I do have a history of painting my nails though. Usually each one a different, bright colour. But then I would usually pick at it and peel it off within a few days.

I don't like makeup. I'd rather show off my natural looks proudly than give a fake image of myself.
