Most of the women I know get their nails and toenails done. I've had a manicure once, when I was 12, my aunt brought me in. I don't like the idea of a stranger touching me to do my toes and nails. Also I would be in a position to have to talk. And it would be difficult to select a color... I think I would get lost in all those colors.

I stopped getting my hair down about 5 years ago, for the same reasons (minus the color issue). I decided to cut it myself once a year. That's one reason my hair is long.

Does anyone else avoid getting hair and nails done for these reasons?

Also there is no way I coud keep up "a hairstyle." I comb my hair once a day and sometimes put it up with a clip or in a twist with no clip, without a mirror.

I've gotten my nails done, but I only ever do my own hair because I'm the only person I trust with it.

The last time I got my hair done was in February. Now I'm trying to grow it out again but I'm getting nagged to get it cut  .
I've never had my nails done. They would get too chipped and broken too soon, hence a manicure wouldn't be worth getting IMO.

When it comes to cutting my hair, I try to get my mom to do it, usually because I know she's not going to hurt me too badly. I keep it short, but long enough for a simple ponytail.

As for my nails, I only get them done occaisionally -- like every few months, before major events and holidays. When I do go, though, I find that no one ever tries to say anything beyond "Hi," or "How are you today?", so carrying on conversations usually isn't too bad.

The hair thing I'm a wee bit more tolerant of but I still find it uncomfortable and haven't been to a salon in years...besides...every stylist I've ever been to has either wanted to give me the "cute look that's sooo in style" or been scissor happy...Ughhh anyone remember the "Dorothy Hamill" look?. *shudder* 8O

Nails no way.

My mom had me get that Dorothy Hamil cut when I was a kid as she didn't really like long hair at all. When a teacher said that I looked good with long hair, she let me grow it out and for the most part, I've had long hair.

Now, the only thing I really have a professional do is trim off the split ends of my hair every 2 months or so. I color my hair often, but that's to make it look more natural. I started doing that when I noticed that my ends were a light brown while my roots were a dark brown during the summer. My hair has a lot of natural curl, to the point where I'm always asked if it's a perm.

I once had a manicure for my brother's wedding after getting a salon gift certificate, but it later chipped off. I do paint my toenails as the polish lasts longer there than it does on my fingers. I'm pretty active, so the polish on my fingernails chips way too easily.

I cut my own nails and I'm letting my hair grow out but I'm thinking about having my mother cut it back up to my shoulders again because I hate dealing with snarls in my hair at the bottom on my right side. It's a nusiance.

i can never get my nails done. i'm horrible at getting them chipped! i play the guitar a lot too so it would be disastrous

as for my hair, i hate getting haircuts but when i need to i have to (like every 3-4 months)... its usually pretty long. i'm not worried about what length my hair is (i wanna donate my hair this winter and it probably won't phase me) i just dont like really blunt ends. it looks better when it hasnt been cut for a while, at least for me cuz my hair is kinda wavy and it goes crazy when it's been cut unless i straighten it which i try not to do

I get my hair done..(coloured) I never really put things in it like gel, as it's just not me.

My nails are completley un-feminine, toenails and fingernails. Sadly, my fingernails and the skin around them are usually in an appalling state, split, ripped, peeled and bleeding. One of my stims is to pick my fingernails and the area of skin around them. :(

Voted for "neither". Have a hangup/issue about paying for something I think I can do on my own.
Never had my nails done, I'm 33. Concept of nail grooming as fee for service is familiar to me only as "something other people do". Bit my nails chronically 'til a couple years ago, so it was completely off my radar screen. Cut & file my nails myself, don't care that they're a mess because they're much better than they were.
I cut/trim my hair myself. Growing up, mother did it for me. For a few years (during my teens) she took me to her hairdresser for perms (I wanted wavy hair, but was displeased w/results). After that, I got a buzz cut, once it began growing out I kept the underside shaved. That required a willing friend on many occasions, sometimes I'd have to do it myself. Did all that for years, got to be too much trouble maintaining, let hair grow out finally.
Color my hair myself, too-had friend in college do it for me at first, she taught me enough so I could. It's a revolving door/treadmill/cyclical habit: roots growing out which I re-dye, the need to repeat at intervals, wish I didn't feel addicted to the chore of sprucing up my appearance this way. Dislike having brown hair, my clothing & skin look better when my hair is (artificially) blonde.

I don't do this stuff. sometimes i get my hair cut but i don't like sitting still to have it done into anything. I have never had my hair colored. I sometimes do it myself, usually i just put it up in a rubberband or have my sister do it.

I got my nails done once because of a dance. They put the things over my real nails to make them look a little longer.............................. They lasted one night and then i pulled them off(along with half of my pinky nail and all of my ring finers nail). I decided it was something i did not need to do and never did them again.

I find it hard to find a good hairstylist and can't trust just anyone with my hair (I'm like emotinally attatched to it). So I trim it myself. I wear it long and its straight so its quite easy, but takes some time.

I've been doing my nails since I was very young- playing with my mother and sister's cosmetics. So I do my own nails for the most part when I want them done. Sometimes I get vinyl nails done over the holidays or when I want to impress someone like if relatives are coming home (to look nice for them) or if I have some sort of interview. But its hell on natural nails and takes at least a month after removal to get them looking decent, so that's only for special occasions and I'd rather spend money on other people anyway.

One thing though if I want a 'hair-do' for the day instead of leaving it more natural, I find it impossible to do if I'm stressed out, because it takes all my concentration. I love to braid it in intricate ways.

I don't use many hair products at all. And while I used to wear full make up daily, I hardly wear any now, unless its a very special occasion for me. As time goes on I wear it less. I like the art of it anyway, rather than use it to cover up. And it was also a way to prepare myself for the outside world (people), I'm a little calmer now and I don't use it for that reason anymore at all, then, again, I don't get out much.
