Today I got a pixie hair cut, my hair used to be medium length but I decided to get it cut. I was feeling good about the decision all day that is until I got home. First thing bf says to me is "I can't look at you, its too short. You look like a lesbian!" I thought it looked great and suited my face better. I got angry, so I'm wondering fellow women of WP, why is it so bad to have short hair on women?

Well, that wasn't very nice of your boyfriend to say.

For me, short hair is a necessity. I compulsively play with my hair if it's not short. Playing with my hair prevents me from getting things done, as I can literally sit for hours thinking while playing with my hair. It's a huge time waster, plus I think it makes me look like a social wreck when I'm in a social situation and compulsively touching my hair. So as soon as my bangs get anywhere near my eyes, I get it cut. Short hair saves my day.

If you're face is oval or long, short hair should suit you well. In any event, ask your boyfriend if he talks to his mother that way (and if he does, well, no comment...).

I've always had short hair. It looks better and more feminine on me than long hair. My hair is very thin and fine and I have an oval face and long neck. With long hair, I look like a witch.

Since my hair has been short (it was cut into a very short pixie cut too) I've been wearing a bit more make-up. I used to just wear concealer and sometimes lipgloss. Now I've some foundation, eyeshadow and blusher too. I don't spend long on it, less time than I did on my long hair anyway. My hair is growing a bit and I'm wearing an alice band too, but I did wear some hair clips, when it was really short, just to give it a girly twist, although I didn't really need it, once I started to wear some more make-up. I have to say that the short hair and the new make-up have given me some confidence and I have turned heads, which I've never done with long hair (not that I'm trying to attract anyone). And I don't think it's because I don't look feminine. I bet yours looks cute.

I think short hair looks great with my face shape too. I feel like my jaw is too strong for long hair, making something look out of place. I've been told by guys that I looked good with long hair and I should grow my hair longer, but I can't agree. I think most guys should grow their hair a bit longer, too, but they don't listen to me either! :P
Anyhow, I don't know that I really feel more feminine/masculine with short hair, but I feel younger and cuter.

I can understand being really let down if your boyfriend/girlfriend had hair that you just adored and then they cut it all off. But still, hopefully your boyfriend can get over something like that...

A lot of guys seem to prefer long hair on women, whether it suits them or not. Every so often, I get frustrated with my unruly hair and cut it in a shorter bob. My husband doesn't say anything about it anymore, but I still get a stricken look from him when I come home from the salon.

I used to have short hair (pixie haircut) for 4 years. When I first met bf, his hair was longer than mine!

I'm glad mine was tolerant of it though.

I don't know why, but it happens to me too. When men discover I cut my hair say the same. A friend said "What? You are crazy?" When I told him by telephone, and he had to see me yet!

But I think I'm way better with short hair! It's more original and I look more vivacious... a lot of women have long hair, why we have to look all the same?

He was warned beforehand and has been cut shorter before. i just find pixie haircuts more sexy ,easy to manage and more suited to my face shape which is oval. Yeah ive found long hair just pulls my face down and also makes me look like a witch. Still, its interesting why men have such an interest in long hair on women. guess it means long hair equals sexy, youthful, female. that is in the media

This is exactly what happened with me when I had long hair. I always seemed "sad". My face shape is oval too and definitely cut haircut is our better look, despite my hair was pretty beautiful when it was long because it was curly. Now it's only "wavy" because it's too short

Well that's one stupid, ignorant, strange reaction for someone who's supposed to love you the way you are! When I got my first pixie cut I was extatic and my friends really liked it and thought it suited me, but that doesn't take away the fact that I was called a lesbian by several strangers (all fuckwads). I'm as heterosexual as they come and it frustrates me so much that people actually believe that hairstyles determine sexuality. All you can do about this ignorance imo is be proud of your hair, flaunt it and have a good conversation with your boyfriend about why your hair seems to be of greater importance to him than your personality and rest of your body.

Recently, my fiancee did say that he liked when I had long hair, but he knows he has no say in what I decide to do with my hair. Now, it's just slightly shorter than shoulder length, and in layers as I think that's what's best for my face, as well as hair type. I have a lot of fine hair, and when it's longer than shoulder length, it just doesn't look right. I've also had my hair in a pixie cut, and the thing I found out was that I kept being called "sir" too much, so I will never get it cut that short again. Right now, I'll keep it the length I have, and I don't plan to let it go past my shoulders, since another benefit is that the natural waves in my hair are more noticeable when my hair is shoulder length at the longest.

I looked much better when I shaved my head, as opposed to long hair (which is what I have now).
Even my housemate (who is always direct / honest) told me so out of the blue.

Most guys don't seem to like us challenging the social ideal of femininity though.

The only opinion that matters when it comes to hairstyles is your own opinion. If you're happy with it then great!

I've noticed that a lot of guys don't like it when their girlfriend changes her hair, or her appearance in general, no matter what the style. Other guys don't like that you feel happy and confident and they will try to put you down. If he is always saying and doing things that make you feel bad rather than good than it is time to ditch the d***head.

Otherwise, he will probably get used to it.

I think that pixie cuts do look quite feminine.

I'm not surprised that you got angry, your BF was incredibly rude.

It's not at all bad for women to have short hair.

But I guess people are entitled to have their preferences - personally I can't stand men with long hair.

I have very short hair - about 1.5 to 2cm all over and I love it. My husband also likes it. Fortunately. In fact he cuts it for me!
