I have the hardest time buying clothes because for the most part I'm not built "like a girl". Rather than an hourglass or a pear, I'm basically built like the letter Y. I have wide shoulders and large breasts, then just straight up and down below that -- no waistline to speak of, narrow hips, no butt and big feet and hands. Men's jeans fit me lots better than women's jeans, which you have to be built like a spider to wear. I'm not unattractive, I'm just not "girly". I've wondered lately if this body of mine and my AS have anything to do with each other. Any thoughts or comments?

Interesting. I tend to have a preference for male clothes. I do have very wide shoulders, but I haven't really given it a thought before.

Sounds like you have an "apple" body type

I was told that I have one too. My shoulders are broad and I don't have a narrow like most women despite not having a lot of fat there. My hips aren't as defined as my broad shoulders.

I've never heard of body shape having anything to do with AS (other than hearing about how people with AS are "more likely to be thin"), but there could be a link.

I do have disproportionately large shoulders, and a v-shaped rib-cage, but a small waist (it's my bone structure, I've always stored more fat there), and disproportionately large-ish hips (though not as disproportionately large as my shoulders).

My legs are feminine shaped I guess, and I do store more fat in my behind than most men (at-least I think I do, I don't pay much attention to people's bums :P).

I have average sized breasts I think? :P
They're a bit big in proportion to me, apparently.

My hands are average sized, and my feet are of average width, but very short :P.

Knock, knock!
Who's there?
Banana! :D

I'd never heard of that before, but that's pretty much my silhouette.
Now that I know that, what do I do... :?

You're not supposed to do anything about it?

Some people dress in certain way which "compliments their body type", but you don't have to do that.

I'm petite, with little shape to speak of. Rather appropriately I prefer male clothes, and the small sizes fit me well. I look like a tiny man!

I'm probably more of an apple because any extra weight goes in my middle. Even in my thinner days, I was always large breasted, broad shouldered, and stockier. I've got more curves than your diagram though....

Thanks for the diagram, delta. The "apple" figure is pretty much my shape, at least when I'm at my "fighting" weight. I'm significantly overweight now, but the basic shape is the same...I just have more belly now. I don't look male -- I look obviously female, but male clothes fit me better.

The reason I even brought this up is because of all the references I've seen made to androgeny and "extreme male personality" in women with AS. I've often felt in my head -- long before I ever had heard of AS -- that I'm as much (if not more) male than female. I don't mean I'm transexual or wish I was a man. I just mean that I seem more traditionally male than female in my interests and habits -- I'm sloppy, I have no interest in marriage or children, I don't enjoy dressing up or shoe shopping or jewelry parties, I enjoy sports, science and history, and I have a strong sex drive. I just figured all this would extend to a physical type as well. But it sounds like that isn't necessarily the case.

Ive had the hardest time understanding what my body shape is because I have a wider shoulder bone structure but I gain weight in my waist, hips and thighs more readily. I dont gain weight very much on top, idk its really confusing. I used to be a swimmer leading to probably some chest expansion and broader shoulders. For me, I mostly have trouble with the bra area, rarely finding something that fits.

I say I am average build. I am not a twig nor do I have a girlish figure and what I mean by that is looking like I have a girl's body instead of a woman's body. I do have a butt and thighs and hips. They used to be narrow but they are wider now. I also have deflated boobs now so they're smaller now.

I'm somewhere between an apple and an hourglass. I'm top heavy, but I definitely have a distinct waist and hips/butt and I have large thighs too. Despite the bust, I have a small frame, with narrow shoulders and tiny hands and feet, although I'm average height.

Is a squared-off "banana" considered girlish???

By the time I've carried four kids and nursed three, I've earned broad shoulders. big saggy boobs, and one hell of a "mummy tummy." It's not belly fat-- it's just stretched-out skin with nowhere to go. Does that count???

I can relate.

I definitely don't have a mannish figure, just an androgynous brain.
