I'm at a loss for which to choose, because I actually have a horribly complicated relationship with this issue!
Out in public: Down
At home: Up
Or also:
For aesthetic purposes: Down
For physical comfort: Up
I have medium-long hair because I think it does indeed frame my face to its best advantage, and I look MUCH better with it down than up. It's like night and day, or a trick of the light, or Dorian Grey's painting! I can
pass for attractive/pretty with it down, but put it up and suddenly my face looks plain.
I'm suddenly reminded of that Seinfeld episode with the girlfriend whose looks changed completely from ugly to attractive depending on the light!
But the paradoxical thing is, I hate wearing it down because of sensory issues. I can't tolerate the feeling of my hair rubbing the back of my neck, or against the skin of my back and shoulders if I'm wearing a summer top, for very long.
So, if I'm out and about in the world I keep my hair down because I look horrible with it up (ten years older and rather plain).
But the very minute I get home and can shut the door on the world, up it goes! I want it off my back and out of the way. Sometimes it's been driving me so crazy that it's the first thing I do and I'm kind of going "URRURGHGHH" in a rush to grab a bear-claw clip and get my hair off me. I hate the look but I prefer the physical feeling of it up.
Great post,
appreciate the analysis you did of the purposes for each set of circumstances & the reasoning behind them.
Makes complete sense to me.
My hair is always tickling me, which drives me nuts,
but it stays more out of my way when I curl it, so that's what I do (plus, it looks much prettier when I make it curly than when I let it lay flat/straight).
Hair scrunchies are one of my most handy tools
