I was wondering if a lot of women in here grow their nails long, or keep them short.

I used to grow mine out long since I paint my nails so much, until I started wearing contacts and couldn't take them out with long nails. So I cut the nails on my right hand and left the ones on my left hand long. And just recently, I broke one on my shoe, and another on one of my best friend's hands (we were playing a handslapping game that went terrible wrong, lol).

So now my nails are short on both hands.

How about you?

I manicure my own nails. I put a under coat then the colour, then a top coat - for both my finger nails and toe nails. Mostly, I keep then long. Occasionally one breaks or I have to trim them back. I never cut them. I cut my toe nails but I never cut my finger nails. I just file them back.

I keep mine very short. They get in my way if they're even just a little long.

I don't do nail polish because it chips and gets on my needlework. Plus, I just can't be bothered with it -- I can think of much more interesting things to do other than polish my nails.

I tried fake nails once -- the shorter "sport" variety. After two days, I couldn't get them off fast enough.

bored rigid with the whole nail thing so they're as short as I can make them and unvarnished. Mind you I spend a lot of time up to my elbows in compost

I like them longer (past my fingertips), but cut them back when they start getting too long. For some reason, if they get too long I'll accidentally cut myself with them, not fun.
I never paint my finger nails, but will occasionally do my toe nails.

I like them long enough to cover the skin above. I'd grow them longer than that but then they break. They do need to be long enough to scratch myself with, but occasionally I gouge my face with an errant thumbnail. clutz.

I had a friend in high school who worked in her mother's hair salon over the summer, and she was able to grow her nails right out so they curved like long talons (she wore polish to strengthen them). Then she took a two week volleyball unit in gym and every day at lunch she'd be down one more nail, until eventually they all broke off. It was funny. She refused to trim them, though, holding out for as long as she could. I can just imagine what her gym teacher thought. She was fun.

Same here.

Mine tend to break if too long.

My nails are too thin and fragile to grow long.

Same here. I'm a habitual nail-biter, so they are hardly ever too long.

But even if I can manage to avoid biting my nails for long enough, my nails are so brittle that they just break, chip, peel, or flake off anyways.
Nail polish does not help. Fake nails (even the super-short) kind, are very hard to work with.

Besides, the longer my nails get, the more likely I am to accidentally scratch myself. Unpleasant!

I find long nails disgusting. Fake nails are even worse.

short - a milimeter or less of white at the ends. I train in martial arts, and my partners tend to get scratched by accident if they're longer.

I bite them, and then i file them down to even them out.

I keep them short because I play the ukulele, but I could not grow them longer if I wanted to.

Longish. I'm a bit obsessed with the way my hands look and I always do my nails myself, since I'm quite fussy about them. 8)

I prefer in between - I like the idea of growing them a bit longish, but always seem to be breaking them. Fortunately, mine grow quite fast, so after cutting them back last week following my latest mishap, they are looking quite respectable at the moment.

I love having red polish on them, but actually seldom indulge in such pleasure.
