I do agree with you all that looks are a pretty huge part in the way women are judged. But when you mention this whole "smart" thing. After going to the current high achieving college that I go to, it seems that people will often associate smart with social competencies. So often times when a person comes across as smart, they are able to utilize their intelligence along with showing social graces and social competencies. While the two don't equal each other, there seems to be a potential correlation or at least what my college has shown me. If your super smart yet socially awkward then people wont respect you. Often times people with more social competencies can what I call create the illusion of smartness even if they aren't that smart.
