I don't particularly like the word females either, because I've read too often in scholarly journals about how a 'man has multiple females chasing after her' or something along those lines. The equivalent to man for professional writing is woman, not female. Female just indicates the gender of an animal. I'd prefer not to be lumped in with female frogs when being referred to. But that's just me...

I don't like the terms 'man and woman', so I use 'male and female'. But to each his own I guess :3

In most contexts, being called a "lady" is enough to make me want to end a conversation immediately and find someone who actually respects me to talk to. It feels belittling, and amounts to being lumped into the feminine-female side of the gender-binary the moment someone hears me referred to as "she" or notices that I've got breasts. It's not as though my appearance screams of ballerinas and fainting fits, either - but I'd be offended in many contexts even if it did.

I mean, I use singular "they" and gender-neutral pronouns enough in daily speech that anyone not choosing to acknowledge the androgynous clothing and appearance, gender-fluid/androgynous behavior and unusual language is probably ignorant or even malicious. I have no time for such people.

Said by the right man. Possibly a rock star.

I'm fine with it, especially by anyone older than me.

If someone younger than me called me a lady, I'd probably laugh at the absurdity, but I wouldn't be offended.

I don't mind it. So long as there's not an assumption behind it that I'm frail and pathetic.

I really don't care what I am called... The annotation is all the same... it's just the connotation that irks people...

I think its pretty pathetic for a woman to be offended by the word "lady". The kind of people that are, seem to be on a quest to find as many words they can, that offend them. Maybe you should tell a woman from Iran, that you're offended by the word, and they'd probably attack you.

To me, a "lady" is the female equivalent to "gentleman". Perhaps both words are over-used and have lost their impact, but in general I appreciate being considered a "lady", which to me simply means that you treat people right and act with a certain amount of class.

Yes, I feel the same. The only time it bothers me it's when it's used in a condescending manner.

Personally, I get more irritated with being called "baby" or "babe". I'm not a baby, so don't call me one.

I often use the word lady, but as a substitute for girl, female or woman when my linguistics begin to bore me. I also use the term "Lass". As someone else commented I DO get pretty pissed if some guy I've never associated with before under parental age refers to me as "sweety" or the like. It makes me want to punch them in the face! Although if someone calls you that, you can always condescend them back by reply "Alright, skip" or "See ya little guy" or something likewise.
