I'm 44 now and about 3 years ago I read a thread on a sci fi message board about Autism and some of it sounded like me. So I read some books, researched on line and diagnosed myself with Aspergers Syndrome. I found a book I thought was great and gave it to my mom and said, "Read this and tell me what you think." She didn't know what to think but she didn't think I was Autistic.

I tried to get a diagnosis and I went to a pyschiatrist (or maybe she was a psychologist, I don't remember) but she didn't give me any test and never would give them to me. She seemed to get coy or something whenever I tried to get back on track on getting a diagnosis. I went to her for about 6 months and gave up for a while. Then I tried again, got a pschologist that listened and tested me and said I was likely on the spectrum and was mildly Aspergic. I'm still working on reevaluating my past, present and future with this new realization. But being diagnosed... it was a good thing. It proved to my mom that it wasn't just all in my head, it wasn't a passing fancy, and once we began looking over my life, we realized the diagnosis made sense. My mom knows I'm Autistic now, she's not in denial, and she see her mother is clearly Autistic but she struggles a bit with the idea that she is too (and I'm sure she is).

I suggested I was autistic to a child psychologist when I was 11--when I was 12, he "diagnosed" me with "autistic tendencies" and dropped me. My parents convinced me I wasn't autistic, until three or four years later I convinced myself I was, again. I was officially diagnosed with PDD-NOS when I was 19.

26. It had never occurred to me that I may have Asperger's. I knew I was different, but I just chalked it up to personality flaws.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was 43, whilst in treatment for Depression. Psychologist noted I did not behave as an NT in depression, but, my Aspie traits dominated and stood out. Interestingly, my son was diagnosed with ASD, 5 years prior. At that time I identified similar Autistic traits between us, however, I thought because I did not flap my hands like him, I did not have Autism!!. Well now I am enlightened! :sunny:

I was officially diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome when I was 12 or 13, but I had been previously diagnosed with PDD-NOS at...3, I think?

I was 12 when I was diagnosed. I suspected nothing before then because I was young and didn't know about mental conditions. I have always known I was different however and used to say at age 10 and 11 what was wrong with me and how I wish I could trade my brain for a new one. I had tons of labels back then; sensory processing disorder, suspected OCD, cluttering disorder, language processing disorder, communication disorder, dyspraxia, ADD, and they mentioned I had poor social skills.

I was diagnosed at 26. I have NVLD, which I discovered from an IQ test, and I went to a neuropsych for confimation. He confirmed the NVLD and threw in Aspergers. I felt more NVLD than Aspie to him, but I guess he thought it fit well enough that he could throw Aspergers into the mix.

Previously, I had every diagnosis under the sun. I feel this one fits best, though it is not perfect.

I was 42 when I was diagnosed.

Previouse to that I have had GREAT difficulties with interpersonal relationships so much that I have (literally) been fired from EVERY job I've ever had before I made it to the 6 month mark. That lead to depression which my Psychiatrist diagnosed about 16 years ago. Have been seeing him every 3 months for the meds (anti-depressants) & it just dawned on him (after hearing Temple Grandin on NPR) that I also have Aspergers (he calls it a "very light case"; I say I've adopted MANY coping mechanisms)

My Doc believes that if I were a man I wouldn't need any diagnosis at all (that my personality is as agressive as a mans/acceptable if I were a man) but I'm not. I've never been able to "click" with women for friends (even as a child) but then again, he says the unwritten social-codes girls & women have are BRUTAL to outsiders (Aspies).

I was diagnosed at age 26 and again (more officially) at age 27. First time with Aspergers, second time with classic autism.

24 when it was verified by several professionals (and multiple tests) but I won't have an official assessment until I am 25 due to the 14 month waiting list. However, irrelevent of what the test says I know I am right on this one and the professionals I see are sure too...it's just in the NHS it can only be made official by certain people and there is only one in my county who will assess adults. My parents have said they would challenge the assessment if it comes back as negative because they are sure too, the professionals I see said the same (although no one thinks it won't confirm AS).

18 months, with LFA. Now I'm HFA, which I believe is due to the early diagnosis.
