If it's normal, why is it so painful?
I don't know if painful periods are 'unnatural' per se
I have read that because women with aspergers tend to be more sensitive in general that our periods affect us more deeply than the average woman. Like I know when I'm ovulating whilst some women I know don't even care or aren't bothered enough to even remember they get periods - like mum.
Then again I'm being sent in for a transvaginal ultrasound because I might have fibroids so it wouldn't hurt to get checked out. I started my period at 10 and felt like I was going crazy through puberty which definitely wasn't normal.
Also, if you have got sensory issues I can imagine your periods are definitely worse than the average woman's.

Unfortunately some normal things *are* painful. When I read the thread title I had no idea the question was limited to menstruation; childbirth is painful, dealing with normal loss and change and life transitions can be incredibly painful, aging can be painful at times, etc. So yes, normal and painful aren't mutually exclusive, necessarily.
That being said, severely painful periods? *NOT* normal. I've seen fibroids mentioned here but I have not read all of the replies, so not sure if anyone has mentioned endometriosis. It's one of the major causes of period related pain and it's treatable. PCOS is another possible issue (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Also treatable. And there are others.
But you may have to talk to several gynecologists to find someone who will consider these, and if any such thing is diagnosed, will take it seriously. Women's pain, in general, isn't taken anywhere near as seriously as it should be.
Hugs to you, and healing.
