I don't think it's fair to consider young people in the media as role models, good or bad. Models don't really have any control over their images. A lot of them are just kids, and even when they aren't, if they don't cooperate, they don't work. Same with actresses - they have to do as they're told or they don't work, and the work environment is very stressful. The girls who end up being "good role models" are the ones with supportive families, which is just plain good luck.

If you want good role models, look to older women who have more control over their lives, and then look at the decisions they've made along the way that have helped. Also, I think women only make good role models for a particular person if they have similar temperaments and talents - otherwise you get the "well, she can do it so why can't you?" syndrome.

The only famous woman I've found who's truly similar to me is Joan of Arc, and she's probably not the best role model: dead at 19? At least she did her own thing, though, and wasn't afraid to follow her dreams.

The only "dumb" reason I posted models for an example is how it affects young kids since I'm guilty of it. I used to try and starve myself since I didn't think I fit into the "normal" size I saw so much in magazines. I guess my first post was a mistake on my part. I really didn't intend to put models down just the very thin ones "and it's probably not their fault for being that thin, yet I have some doubts" I just worry about anoerexia becoming more common in younger children. The main reason it concerned me was when I had come across websites with significantly close statistics. Then related to some of the stories these children had to say.

I don't know if I should even bother putting the websites down. I'm afraid it might cause too much controversery as it might have already, I hope not. So I just wanted women and men to name women who either come across as good role models or bad role models from their own personal lives or media and how it affected them personally. I see way too many men who are famous and talked about in many threads. Just an idea I had as I don't see too many men replying in this thread.

I think I've asked the same question, but got many negaitive responses or responses I wasn't expecting from men and women in other threads. So I thought it would help if maybe I put it under Women's Discussion. Might be more appropriate here, I don't know. I was just curious.

another example of a good female rolemodel is Quentin Bryce. she was appointed the first female Govenor General of Australia recently. the govenor general is the queens representative.

she shows women that they can do what they set out to do.

I think a good female role model is Sophia Loren. Sophia is 73 years old and still looks amazing. She has a good figure that isn't stick thin and has never had plastic surgery.

but. . . I mean . .

I guess, it seems important to have good role models in areas other than appearance.

Indeed! Appearance is a non-issue for me. This is why I orefer Marie Curie as role model over anyone who is famous only because he sings, looks, acts in a certain way. (I must confess though that I was rather inspired by a childrens' song in German about a girl which defies female stereotypes...)

Is this a children's song in German you might care to translate, or just share?
