Makeup makes me feel slightly less ugly. I keep it 'natural' because I dislike bright red lips and 'panda eyes'.

"Faffing about" is a British expression, much like the Aussie "f&*king the dog". It's a colloquialism for idly messing around in a harmless way, wasting time, or procrastinating. :) It's a good one, I use it a lot!

On topic.... I dislike the feeling of foundation and hate mascara, and lipstick feels claggy to me. I always worry about it clumping where my lips meet and having that weird line when I talk, which distracts me on other people. Shudder. But I do wear tinted lip glosses (I like Kiehl's!) sometimes, and I wear concealer when I have spots or bad dark circles. My workplace is very hot and I'm often working hard and sweating, so anything more isn't very practical anyway.

I love makeup, too. But, I only take about 5 minutes or less to put it on. I am not into eyeshadow and blush and all that. I use Bare Minerals foundation, a quick application of mascara and a swipe of eyeliner and I am done. I feel like a clown once I start putting on eyeshadow and blush.

The only make up I use is a concealer for zits when I go out in public and pawpaw ointment on my lips for a balm.

But when I worked on ships, to help remind myself that I am a respectable, mature, proud, woman and should behave as such in a male dominant, mysoginist, descrimatory workplace, I painted my toenails. It really put some guys off, especially the ones who believed a woman, insisting on working in an industry where women are traditionally taboo, must conform to the male culture.

"Scubbing up", "Tarting up" and "Fussing about" are the only colloquialisms I have heard here in relation to putting on makeup.

I'm Aussie and I've never heard that one before. That's disgusting and embarrassing.
