I have a question: can it be used effectively if you've given birth to children and your cervix is no longer totally smooth/round/whatever? I have kind of a "notch" in mine...

What? Too much?

All of the brands make two sizes, one for women who haven't given birth and one for women who have, so yeah you can still use it if you've given birth.

I would really like to try one of these - Does anyone recommend a brand?

I'm all for protecting the environment and minimalizing the effect of my period. I hate changing my tampon, especially in public. I hear tampons cause more cramps too, so I'd rather not use them, but pads just feel gross to me. I'm all for "celebrating womanhood" or whatever, but these are things I'd rather just not have to deal with. Postponing it for 12 hours at a time seems like a pretty good deal.

Plus, it's ridiculous that we have to pay so much for female sanitary products out of our own pockets. Just saying.

I personally recommend Mooncup or Ladycup.

Depends what's best for you - for example Ladycup is the best for me, where as some people adore Divacup, MeLuna, or Lunette (not suitable for me as they're too long and firm) - see this post from the Menstrual Cup Support Community for details on different brands and links to size charts which explain how to pick the best cup for you. Menstrual cup support Community is the best source of information, look through some of their posts or join to ask the community for help if you need it.

Okay, cup question! Suppose you start to leak, and you are in a public place. Presumably you need to empty it, right? How do you wash it? Do you just put it back in with old dried blood in/on it? Do you walk out to the bathroom sink, bleeding all the while, and wash it blithely in the sink? Do you wait until the bathroom is empty, worrying someone will walk in on you washing it? Do you swish it in the toilet (I know toilet water is clean if it's not used; nonetheless, I would not feel it was clean or safe to wear after that). None of these seem like workable options to me, and until that problem is solved permanently, I would not consider using a cup.

If you are in a public place, its ok just to empty it and re-insert it without rinsing it, just wipe it with tissue then rinse it the next time you can. (just wash your hands before and after going into the cubicle)
Its very unlikely to leak, it makes a nice seal so even if you cart-wheeled all day there would be no leeks. (I can't cart-wheel at all)
Average menstrual flow is unlikely to exceed the capacity of a mooncup for the whole day, and it can be left in place for 8 hours, which I think is longer than a tampon.

It's only blood, and no different from cleaning your hands after changing tampons or pads...only you don't have to do it as often as how often you have to change tampons or pads, and you don't have to deal with leaking or potential infections either.

I am an avid couponer and do not pay for my products! I did buy that MoonCup (or whatever it was called costing me $30), and I received my 1st yeast infection after a day of wearing it. Im guessing moving on a hot day in July coupled with the alien in my hoo-ha, changed my flora!

The Diflucan I took for the yeast gave me PVCs for almost two full months after. Now it sits in it's little cloth bag in the bottom drawer in my bathroom. I cannot seem to throw away this $30 item, even though I will never wear it again...

Why won't you use it again?
There's no way a menstrual cup could ever give you any sort of infection - they don't harbour bacteria or encourage yeast, they don't effect vaginal pH and they allow vaginal cleaning - the only way using a cup could possibly result in a infection is either if you didn't rinse it correctly after washing or if you introduced bacteria/yeast into your vagina via your hands when inserting or removing the cup.

If you're really determined not to use it again, why not sell it?
You won't get the full amount, but a used cup will sell for up to $20 on the menstrual cup sales community - http://mc-sales.livejournal.com - better than having it sitting going to waste.
