Girls liking Guy stuff

great thread, I have always been a tomboy...I like heavy rock music, hate romantic comedies, love science fiction, like football, hate cooking & shopping & entertaining...when I was a kid I always hung out with boys I get along so much better with them!

I'm an aspie with a very feminine look but interests that are both feminine and masculine.

I am a tom boy. I had some dolls when I was a kid but didn't really play with them. I like some girl things but not many.

While I do like to be feminine, when I was about 20 or so I went through a phase where I liked to dress like a boy. I wore boy jeans and boy button up shirts, had really short hair (but with a rat tail - don't hate, it was the 80's) and carried a wallet. When the Miami Vice look got popular for guys I went to the boys department and bought me some of those pastel outfits. I love them! I dressed like a lesbian but I was straight as could be, I just like the look. I still like boy jeans if I can find ones that fit me - I like the old Levi's 501 - and either guys button down shirts or tshirts, and tennis shoes or boots. I'll wear that from time to time depending no what I'm doing. I like that look too, just like I like the feminine looks.

I don't buy into the whole girl/guy stuff. Last time I looked, men didn't fix cars with their penises, and girls didn't paint their nails with their vaginas generally, they use hands and brains.

I suspect the tomboy/masculine thing most aspie women have going on is more a rejection (conscious or not) of cultural gender distinctions.

Which makes sense. What exactly about my biology means I am "meant" to bake cakes? Nothing. Just cultural stereotypes.

I just do/wear/like things. If people think they are masculine or feminine things, that is eere baggage to work through.

How girly/tomboyish I am varies. Right now I'm inbetween: I do take care of my hair (since I recently got it permanently straightened! Goodbye ugly curls!), but I love my camouflage jacket because it makes me look cool. I was the first in my year at primary school to get sick of her dolls and start playing video games though, and I used to prefer the company of guys to girls. I only ever wear a skirt for school.

Throughout my childhood, I was repeatedly annoyed at learning gender coding through making mistakes. I like to be on both sides of the fence. I like to be strong and capable of taking care of myself and fixing things, and I still have plenty of boy clothes in my closet. When I did socialize I would gravitate more towards guys and found more fulfillment in guy-coded things. Building forts, skateboarding, heavy music, playing basketball, etc. But I also pluck my eyebrows, go to the spa, put on heels when I feel like it, and even wear a skirt when its hot out. Things like horseback riding, swimming and reading I guess would cover the divide as gender neutral.

I don't think myself as being a tomboy. I seemed to be more girly when I was very young because I liked wearing dresses and having really long hair but when I entered my teens I started hating dresses and wore my hair shorter because it's very thick and turns into a mop if I let it grow for too long. The only bottoms I like wearing are jeans but I hate shorts even in summer, but I like short sleeves and tank tops and hate long-sleeve shirts even in winter although I didn't mind them as much when I was younger. I like "girly" colors like pink and light purple, and I don't care for sports at all about the only physical activity even ever been good at is swimming. I only like wearing sneakers and I hate the stereotype that women can never have enough shoes and think it's very sexist to make women's shoes that cause pain and injury to their feet. I like cute cartoon characters and dolls and stuffed animals but I also like video games, although I mainly play only T and E-rated games that aren't full of blood and gore. (actually I read that around 40% of gamers are now female so even if it's slightly less than half it's not like we don't exist although many game companies appear to believe we don't). As a kid I would sometimes play with my cousins' He-man figures as well as "girl" toys and I liked frogs and bugs. In the country where I grew up there was a frog pond and I would often go hunting for frogs and other small critters. When I was in my early adult years I generally got along with men better, although I do get along with women as well I was generally more relaxed around men who were friendly and saw me as a friend and nothing more. I don't know why in his day and age we can't enjoy the best of both "gender specific" things without being labeled, although I think the only reason it's more acceptable now for girls to like "boy" things is because they're still believed to be superior or having any value to "boy things". So if a feminist mom won't let her daughter have a Barbie but encourages her to play football the mom is being totally backwards.

I dislike this labeling of "girl stuff" and "guy stuff". Applying gender to certain activities is a stupid practice that only really serves to deter people from their passions. It seems especially restricting to men. I know plenty of women who like "guy stuff", but far fewer men enjoy "girl stuff". Girls are called tom boys if they like dirt bikes and hunting, while the sexuality of guys comes into question if they enjoy sewing or care about fashion.
