Chewed it, but my mother absolutely demanded I stopped doing it. Twirled it a lot and teachers at school used to go ape at me...so then it became what it is now a sort of run fingertips over the back of my scalp thing...

I actually think a lot of my obvious movement stims became a little bit inconspicious because my mother would demand I sit still and not fiddle...so I do things like stroke fabric of my dress back and forth.

I used to chew it but there was nothing anyone could do about it.

Yep, when I was a girl I would grab a nice, oh, centimeter diameter of hair and just put it in my mouth, like a rose stem, and maybe more suck than chew on it. No one said a word about it, and I never had a second thought about it until I was long grown up and found out that this was a "stim". Do NT's really not do this?? It seemed so normal at the time . . .
Also rocked a lot, listening to rock and roll.
Also spun around in circles till I had to lay on the floor, and enjoy watching the ceiling go 'round in circles.
Also would stare into space until my field of vision reduced to a spot.
Also jiggled one leg up and down, and still do this, though not the others.
Never had a clue these were all stims.
I think maybe BOTH of my parents are Aspies! And now my daughter can say the same.

I was into my nails as a kid--- i used to tear them with my teeth until they bled. Somehow, the pain didn't seem to faze me. I would just keep doing it anytime. when i was bored, when i was stressed, at home, outside. I remember one time i tore my thumbnail over half off up to the little halfmoon area. It bled and i just sat there and looked at it. It took forever for the nail to grow back properly. I would chew off any warts on my hands, too ( i still do that since i have one on my thumb). does anyone else do those sort of things, too?

I did both. I'm 27 years old and I still chew my hair not know that I'm doing it. But there are time wher I twirl it more then chew it. :!:

Both. I used to have this absurd hairstyle as a kid (looked like a mushroom) because I kept chewing and twisting my hair into knots. My hair was ALWAYS tangled. It was not even a nervous thing either... Just something I did.

I wasn't aware that I did both until someone pointed it out in two instances. First, a classmate in grade school once asked me "You eat your hair?" when she saw me chewing away. I answered with a "Yes, don't you?" as though it was the most normal thing to do in the world and it just cracks me up remembering about it.

The second time was when I had to go see a psychiatrist once (who misdiagnosed me, argh! best left for another story though  ). I was just sat right outside the room waiting to be called in and some random guy remarked about how he can tell that I was INSANE because I was twirling my hair.

I don't do either anymore. Or if I still do it without being aware of it, at least no one's been pointing it out so far. :P

I chewed my hair as a child. I have long hair now, below my waist and I almost always keep it braided now. It's hard for me to take care of without help :p I twirl it a lot but don't chew it anymore (heaven forbid!! !)

My daughter likes to chew her hair now and I try and discourage her from doing it. It's good to remember that I did it too though lol. I need to find something else for her to chew...

twirling and knotting - seriously purple fingers from twirling to the extreme and cuttiing off blood supply - then having to pull hair out or somehow tear it to get my finger back. Occasional bald patches and frequent frizzy bits. Still do it when I'm tired and have temporaly forgotten how much s*** my hairdresser gives me for doing it. Been seeing same hairdresser for 12 years and she accepts my peculiarities so I am motivated somewhat not to p*** her off.

Worst ever was chewing gum and twisting hair - no prizes for guessing what happened.
