I always carry a purse (bag), however..... there are some requirments:
1) The strap on the bag must be long enough to cross over the front of my body. I hate to have to hold one shoulder up and would lose my purse if I couldn't "wear" it.
2) The fabric must be somewhat neutral in color. Earth tones, brown or black leather, denim, etc....
3) The bag must have some organizational "system" to it that suits the way I organize things.
4) The bag must be a certain size and shape. Typically the bag is just large enough to hold an 8.5 x 11 size book or folder or no smaller than a half sheet of paper. The bag must be reasonably flat and somewhat form fitting. I don't like to fight with the bag for space.
My ideal bag?
Currently I am carrying a swiss army gas mask bag. It is a pleasing shade of olive green and has a long adjustable strap that fits across my body. It has three small internal pockets to accomodate my wallet, checkbook and chapstick/powder/etc. It has one large pocket to accomodate a book, gloves, hat, mail, etc. There are hooks on the outside for me to hang my keys from.
I have been using swiss army gas mask bags for years!! I also have "nice" bags for those rare occasions when I go out and want to dress up. They are all similar in size and composition to the swiss army gas mask bag.... only pretty.
Whipstitches, that is the coolest idea. I'll have to look for one.
Personally, I despise purses - they feel superfluous and I fidget constantly and often end up walking around clutching the darn thing for fear that someone will dig around in it and I won't feel it - and also, when I walk it slaps and bangs into me which drives me absolutely bonkers.
If possible, I usually just throw my wallet in my back pocket, keys/chapstick/gum in my front, and go. Sadly now I have to cart around a cell phone for work. Because of the added cell phone (bah!) I usually wear a small backpack. Although it's usually empty it is useful when I buy things, to avoid accumulating too many plastic bags.
In my day-to-day life, this doesn't cause issues. However, when I go out I have problems since a red sports backpack does not look good with heels, and sadly few dresses have back pockets in them.
I've started sewing small flat pockets inside some of my skirts and dresses: just big enough for ID, a few rolled twenties, and maybe my chapstick. Far from ideal, but better than carting around a silly little purse!
