If you ever want to hear a room full of women fall silent with shock declare that you've never seen the movie Titanic, and you never will, because really what's the point? You already know what's going to happen, and how it's going end. I've also never seen most of the movies that have been mentioned in this thread so far. It's just not my thing. Though, I do usually like movies with Sandra Bullock in them. I guess they're considered chick fliks, aren't they? The last one I saw was Premonition. It was really good.

Here is a "chick flick" from 1939 that I am pretty fond of...the remake made me kinda nauseous though....
I guess it might possibly be the mother of all chick flicks.

There is even a full-color fashion show right in the middle of the movie, if I am not mistaken.

I don't like most modern American ones.

But I really like Amelie, it is probably my favorite movie.
With that being said, the foreign ones I like Amelie (France), Kamikaze Girls (Japan), Jeux d'enfants (france), all are very quirky and fun. I also like some classics.

I loathe these movies, how they seem to expect the audience to become weepy and emotional over such unoriginal, insipid scenes. I also tend to simply not find many female characters very interesting - possibly it's because I can't identify with them or understand why things that seem to be silly to me are so important to them.

Perhaps conversely, I do actually enjoy romantic movies and fiction, but what I watch and read are stories with gay male pairings.

I´ve never seen "Amelie", I should probably check it out. I was worried it would be a typical chic flic, that´s why I haven´t seen it so far...

I also haven´t seen "The Women" (never heard of it before)- but generally, I find classics to be better than modern day chic flics.

Another classic movie I like is called "My Man Godfrey". It´s full of ditzy women, but they make a joke about it, and it´s quite funny, I think. Of course, in that movie I relate more to Godfrey, and not to the women....

I prefer "There Will be Blood" Starring Daniel Day Lewis, and "Citizen Kane."
"Shane" was another classic.
and for a series on tv , you cannot go past "Carnivale," which was prematurely axed by HBO and was one of the most brilliant things i have ever seen on the screen.
Throw in a few Bergmann movies, some Kurosawa films and some Italian Neorealismo movies like Bicycle Thieves, and of course Fellini's stuff with Nino Rota's brilliant scores (Juliet of the Spirits, Roma etc.) and i might be lured away from my special interest here and there. A good Pinter telemovie adaptationsof one of his plays is ok too. Films with Dirk Bogarde - when he began choosing interesting scripts....

I could not even absorb movies with female emotional content until around 36 or so.
WHen i was at school we went on an excursion to see "The french Lieutenant's WOman" and i could not even follow the dialogue because i could not comprehend exchanges for that duration, let alone understand words and faces and feelings. I've learned more since then.

chick flicks? bah...humbug......

Wow, I haven´t seen any of those movies except "Citizen Kane", which I liked. I do like movies with an interesting psychological content, and older films seem to have more depth to them. I´m quite a movie buff, actually, but I´m very picky about what I like. Nowadays, I often tend to prefer Art Films, if I can find one that I can understand. Some of them are a bit too far fetched though. And the problem with most modern day chic flics is that they are flat and silly...they tend to be very similar, almost the same story and characters each time. But I guess I´ve said that before....

i think you would like some of those films, Morgana, given your threads and posts on WP. they are all quite meaty and chewy and the viewer works and doesn't just sit and watch.
(or that could be my brain - that works everywhere overtime plus  )

I also forgot to mention The adaptation of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" which is brilliant.
Scout is a hero.

And I do like some of weirdo David Lynch's films.
I didn't understand Eraserhead until I had a baby - then it all made perfect sense - especially for this autistic mother who doesn't like anyone demanding anything from her, doesn't like noise and doesn't like the constant pressure to be physical or affectionate.

I don't like them much either. I prefer science fiction films, or action/war/horror films. My favourite at the moment is iron man. That suit is amazing! Check out the trailer :)

I like science fiction a lot, that is, if it´s GOOD science fiction. I like science fiction that actually has a little science in it, not the ones that are just hype. I´m not much into war movies though, I don´t like war, and sometimes I get too depressed. I do like a good thriller though...CIA stuff, or political intrigue, or psychological intrigue. I just don´t like movies that are too violent.

I can't stand chick flicks or romantic comedies. I like a bit of... substance in a film.

I detest this 'genre'. Part of it is the fact that I'm gay and can't relate to them; but even is I was straight I'd still find them to be an insult to my intelligence.

I love that one too. However, it´s not your average "chic flic".

I like GWTW, but because I find it interesting historically and in terms of character depiction (the novel is better still). The big Rhett/Scarlett romance I thought was one of the least interesting parts.

In terms of romances, I think that one of the reasons I enjoy reading and watching male/male stories is that in a heterosexual pairing, it's a rare work that does not try to force the characters into traditional gender roles to a degree and often distorts them by doing so. Those predefined gender roles are absent in a homosexual pairing, and the characters relate to one another as people.
