I have one question: How do you insert tampons when you're a virgin? My vagina in VERY tiny.

Hi there. My name is Elaine and I am a Registered Nurse and one of the Tampax and Always women's health experts. I came across your email and want to help.

It is a personal decision about whether to use pads or tampons. The Always Ultra thin pads are so discrete and comfortable; you may want to try them. Tampax tampons give you the freedom and discretion to do whatever you'd like while you are menstruating, including swim. So you need to consider your lifestyle and come up with the type of product that will be best for you.

It can be uncomfortable to learn any new technique, and tampon insertion is a new technique for you. It may or may not be actually painful, but a totally inserted tampon is not felt and, therefore, is very comfortable. After a few times, the insertion becomes automatic and you really don't feel anything. Tampon insertion should be tried when you have your period.

As for which tampon to begin with, I recommend Tampax Pearls. I hear daily from girls that find these are the easiest to use. You should be using the lowest absorbency tampon for your flow and changing the tampon every 4-8 hours. If you find your tampon fully saturated before 4 hours, you should be using the next absorbent size. If you remove the tampon at 8 hours and still see white fiber on the tampon, your tampon is too absorbent...drop down one absorbency for the next time.

If you are doing it correctly and cannot insert a tampon it may be that your hymen, the thin membrane that partially covers and protects the opening to your vagina may be too small or too tight to allow the tampon in. If this is the problem you may have to stretch this opening. You can try with a little bit of K-Y Jelly on the tip of the applicator...the more you practice the more you will stretch the hymen. If you cannot stretch it yourself, you may want to ask your doctor for help.

This is a lot of information so if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask away.

All the best,
NurseElaine

I'm a virgin/never been penetrated by a male (I'm lesbian and I don't use sex toys) and it makes no difference. Tampons are too small to make any difference.
A bit TMI here, but I'm VERY tight, and I still find it no problem putting a tampon in.

I didn't really start using tampons until I was 18 and when I started I had trouble getting them in.

I have pain with penetration so that could be why.

Using plastic applicators with rounded tips helps and there are slimmer ones you can buy.

I always use pads but I wear tampons in the shower to prevent leakage. I wear both when I'm out on the heavier days cos I'm scared of leakage D: I hate the feeling of pads too but it's too risky to just use tampons cos they fill up too quickly for me. I used to have discomfort with tampons but I think I got used to them now. I've never heard of those cup things before though. =0

Neither, I use a menstrual cup, Mooncup (the UK one) is my choice :)

I'm always amazed not more women know about menstrual cups, here in Norway almost no one has heard about it.

I find it to hands down be the most comfortable and hazzle free way of having my period, which I hate.
You just pop the cup in and forget about it for 8+ hours.

I'm just concerned about washing it out and stuff, because if you've got no access to a toilet if you're out camping or something, and no proper wash facilities, then you'd have to stick to tampons and pads D:

I would get one, if it wasn't for the fact that I change my tampon a lot in public toilets etc.

I watched the instructional video on the site and I don't think I'd ever be able to get it in or out because I have problems with penetration.

I also don't like that I'd have to stick my fingers in there to get it in and out. I won't even use tampons without an applicator.

Yeah, that's also what I was thinking about. I hate getting just a little bit of menstrual blood on my fingers when inserting/taking out a tampon or cleaning myself up, let alone shoving my fingers up there xD

Pads. Just the thought of sticking something up there makes me sick. I'd feel sick trying to get hold of it to remove it as well. Even that I only touch when placing it, I have paper between my hand and the pad when changing it, because I find it so icky. I'd wash forever otherwise.

Yes, redrobin, it's gross, but guess what? We don't have a choice in it!

Tampons--I can't even feel them once they're in. Feeling a pad underneath me drives me crazy, like I'm wearing a diaper.

Pads because I'm not allowed to, and because I might forget it's in my vagina. *shudders* Gross thought.

Why would you have to wear ANYTHING in the shower? I take my showers as a good opportunity well....open the dam and let it all flow out so to speak. It certainly makes my periods lighter afterwards.

There are many different types besides pads and tampons.

I use a disposable cup (until I can use the reusable one) but I'm on the pill so I only get four periods a year. The cup is the most environmentally friendly option (next to not having a period at all and having less periods) because they last TWELVE HOURS.

ALSO there is a SPONGE option however I have never seen it for sale.

I also use tiny tampons that don't have that extra plastic wrapping crap.

Pads are the WORST option for the environment!

Its against my religion (and personal wants) to have sex on my period, but if thats why you choose pads then...
*whispering* You can do it while using a cup... with no mess.

Please consider the environment when buying period stuffs.
You have more options then you think that are eco friendly! And I find it fun to check out.
