I have posted this before, there is a thread about it on this board already.

I was 17, almost 18. It was Christmas time and I was not amused. Okay, I was traumatised. Knowing beforehand didn't stop me from completely freaking out when I got it. My mum was thrilled.

Mine started at 12.5.

I'm 40 now. At the time, though, 12-14 was the standard range for menstrual onset, with some outlier girls earlier and later. Anyone older than 16 though was the rare duck.

It's DEFINITELY gotten younger and younger through the years. I feel bad for anyone younger than 12...seems like so little time for childhood.

I agree, some girls are now starting as early as 8 or 9 years old. I feel bad for girls that young because at that age many of them don't know proper hygiene and how to keep themselves clean. I don't have any kids but I can't imagine having to remind an 8 or 9 year old to make sure she changes her sanitary pads so that she won't have an accident.

But these girls are maturing so much faster these days. When I was 12 years old, I still looked like a little girl. I was still flat chested and wore my hair in ponytails. But some of these 12 year olds nowadays look like 20 year olds. But emotionally, they are only 12. I worry that some of these horny, pedophile men will take advantage of these girls.

I find it pretty interesting how most people remember the exact date that they got it, though. I'm probably reading into it too much...

I remember it because it was my 12th birthday. LOL

I received a swimming costume as a present and had to model it.. luckily no-one noticed. I only told my mum 2 months later when it started getting heavier and she didn't have any pads that I could steal. So she thinks I started 3 months after I actually did. I wasn't too bothered about it. I don't think I even knew what it was at first.. it just happened. I didn't give it a second thought. Then I went "ohhh hang on"

I was 12 and I did kind of the same thing. My mother had bought me some pads in preparation for it and I didn't tell her until I was about to run out of them. For some reason I was too embarrassed to really talk about it so I left her note before I left for school.

13, nearly 14. And my mom started me on tampons rather quickly. I recall that in the mid-late 1980s, a lot of the teener magazines had "informative" adverts for tampons. Typically, the ads would involve one girl schooling another girl who thought that tampons were only for women, or at least non-virgins. I guess in those days, it was still uncommon for teenagers to use them.

I think I was like, 15 or 16? I hate trying to remember dates...

I only found out because I was cutting something with a razor and cut myself. Go to the loo to clean up, and upon taking of my pants I noticed my leg wasn't the only thing bleeding. I guess being brutally honest helped with that though, cause I just wandered into mums room, grabbed her box of tampons, waved on the way out. I figured it out by the directions. Course, mum thought I was using them for some sort of science experiment cause she was waiting outside wondering why I took them. Guess she didn't clue in right away.

It was on September the thirtieth, 1996. I was 12 years, 8 months old - I read that in that time an average age of the first period in girls of my country was 12 years and 8 months, like in my case.

I was 16! a late starter. My mom refused to believe me that I had started, luckily I had stowed away a pad from one of the sex ed classes. she finally believed me the next day.

15, right before going for a riding lesson

All my friends had started theirs and I was feeling smug that I'd got away with it

I didn't tell my mum - she found out after I stained my jeans because I didn't change pads quickly enough, but that was after the first few and they had started getting heavier.

Edited to add: There's an accepted correlation between amount of fat on a girl's body and the onset of periods. I think I was a late-ish starter because I was pretty skinny. I wonder if girls are starting sooner now due the increase in child obesity.

I had a false start at 15, then started properly at 16. I was also skinny Macallan.
