Yup - menstrual cups, cheapest you can buy right now is $17.62 and that's for ten years. I got my Mooncup for £19 ($30.52), all my other cups have been won, my diaphragm was free on the NHS, so that's £19 for the next 30 years, practically nothing...less than £1 a year, verses about £5-£10 per month it cost me when using tampons and pads.
What are they? Never heard of them. Is it a cup that goes up there? Wouldn't that be uncomfortable?
No they're ten shades of wonderful. I always found tampons really, really uncomfortable and could always feel them, so I thought that having a menstrual cup in would hurt like hell, but I can't feel it and find it much more comfortable than a tampon. It's basically a small silicone cup that you fold up, stick in, and it suctions to your vaginal wall hovering under your cervix so it catches all the blood that flows. When it gets full you unsuction it and empty it out into the toilet. I seriously can't tell you how amazing it is, although some people don't like the idea of being that "intimate" with their vagina. You sort of have to poke around to see where your cervix is so you can place it correctly, but I kind of like it because it gives me a better understanding of what's going on down there. I like being more in tune with my body.
Sounds like a lot more hassle than a tampon.. sticking your fingers all the way up there.. and then I can't imagine how you're supposed to know when its full or get it out.. I couldn't do it. I only use applicator tampons.
It does take a little more time putting it in than a tampon, but with me tampons always, always leaked and I had to wear pads on top of tampons because of my high flow, but with a cup I only have to change it every 5 hours or so (some women get a better run with them but I have a really, really heavy flow). It takes me about 30 seconds to put the mooncup in, so really it's not too much worse than a tampon. Plus you save loads of money, and it's so much better for the environment. I love em, but they're not everyone's cup of tea.
And I'm not going to lie, the first few times you use it it's messy. The first time I took it out, I spilled blood all over my bathroom floor. It was really nasty. That only happened once though.

They leak for me too, I always wear them with a pad. I guess the more you use them the easier they are to get used to. The bit about them attaching them to the cervix makes me squemish, but thats probably because i have issues with putting my fingers in there.
I've got a menstrual cup, too. And it works for me way better than tampons, even though I haven't had any major problems with them.
It's true they're more hands on and you have to be comfortable with your body and like the general idea of the cups. Nonetheless, I don't complain. I usually need to empty it only every 12 hours, except for the first day. I just pour it into the sink and wash. As for insertion, it has to be folded and when they're in, it's essential to make sure it got unfolded and holds firmly in place. Removal might be more difficult, but it'll get better with practice.
It's mostly in your mind.
Many women feel the obligation to wear things and put things onto their skin.
The same way many men feel obligation to own things, more expesive things. In my area I notice that young mens expetations what they must own are higher than womens expectations. And I don't live in patriarchal society,
But as I am trying to give up the mountain of things in our consumer life, I do not feel that I would be losing my femaleness with it, or the liking signals from men.
Okay I am quite androgynous and high heel shoes don't make me feel better about myself but actually the opposite. I understand that to many it is important. And yes you should feel good about yourself even if it takes the heels and this seasons fashion.
But many things in the list of the opening post are such which we are made to believe that we need by stupid commercials and maybe something else stupid. Most of the cosmetics meant to improve your skin or hair are plain useless but expensive. And need for a bra is totally dependent on the body type and personal comfort preference and is not dependent on any expetations from surrounding people - when you have more than one layer of clothing, they can't tell. And how many of them you really need? Some things in that list are often needed, but you have choice between options - like menstrual stuff and birth control. In developed countries these things do not cost so much that you should be complaining, compare with cost of food.
I want to say, that as a woman I can downsize - buy just mascara and replace all the rest of the cosmetics with soap and oil, buy secondhand clothing, few pairs of footwear and one not fancy bra and cut my own hair and take my boxed lunch to work. And feel just great and shiny. But I imagine that a man who would not own some tech-gadgets and can't afford eating out would more easily lose his good feeling about himself. I guess I discriminate here, in my opinion women are more flexible and often stronger than men. But also women are allowed to be poor and weird more than men are. Not wearing something as a woman is not so condemned as not owning something expensive as a man. I think so.

It makes me feel all squicky. >.<
No they sit lower than tampons do as they're usually not as long as tampons. They do sort of seem intimidating when you first start because they're a lot wider than tampons, but at the risk of being too explicit, they're not nearly as big as the average erect penis.
Here's an article that has some diagrams so you get an idea of where/how they sit.
