I always knew I was different. The last few years have made it very difficult for me. While I lived in the US, being more "gender neutral", in the sense that I mow the lawn, etc...or just do guy stuff was not a huge issue for me. It basically meant that my other girl friends were more like me or they weren't. However, moving to a Latin country has made my life miserable. There are things that I feel are better, but one of the hardest issues is the "gender roles". Gender roles are much more marked here...ie. look pretty, cook, clean, be nice...vs. in the US that those gender roles are either "implied" but not demanded or not even implied by some. Here, people will actually TELL YOU that you should be cooking for your husband, blah, blah, blah...which of course, has made me be the biggest witch where I live and caused me to completely just retreat and not want to talk to most people.

Are there any Latinas here who feel that it is more difficult when you are around other Latinos to have peace?

I'm only one-fourth Latina, so perhaps I only have one-fourth the difficulties ... lol ... I'm just joking :)

I have never lived in a Latin country, but I live in the American Southwest, which as you know has a large Latino population. I have occasionally experienced the attitudes you allude to, but no more than other parts of the country, I don't think. Perhaps it's also dependent on age ... it's more acceptable for middle-aged women not to conform so strongly to strict gender roles.
