I am a fairly buff woman. Are there any women here on WP who have some large muscles? I am asking this because of the whole speculation that high level of testosterone exposure might have increased the chances of having autism spectrum disorder.

I am a woman with aspergers but don't have large muscles as you mentioned but I have considered the link n testosterone and women with AS. I have a deeper voice than most women and was always a tomboy as a child and seem to have alot of male tendencies.

I am not "buff"..but I am sorta sturdily built...I can lift heavy objects and I might have more dense muscle mass...I have narrower hips and a not-very-pronounced waistline, so mens' jeans sorta fit me better...
I felt quite androgynous as a child...

I have the "male" finger digit ratio....

But...I do not have a low voice. I have a childlike voice.

I think the testosterone responsible for finger length ratios and brain development (hence autism maybe) is the one you are exposed to in the womb; it's the testosterone of your mother. Your muscle mass today is influenced by the current level of your own testosterone.

I'm an extreamly buff woman. I have good sized biceps, and I always have. I also have very sturdy legs. At 245 lbs, sometimes I wonder how much is muscle, and how much is flab. My upper abodmen also feels more like firm, hard muscle, than body fat. The main thing is that I'm at peace with my body, for the first time in my life. I wouldn't mind getting down to 200 lbs, though. I also find that I'm more wirey than most women, and I have more energy.

If you are exposed to more testosterone while in the womb, then does that mean that you would be inclined to have a naturally higher testosterone level throughout your life?

What causes the higher testosterone level in the mother?

A lot of my traits, I inherited from my ASish mom...btw...

She is not particularly masculine, but she is not hyper-feminine either...

I have the male finger ratio and am stronger than the average woman, but I have a large bust and wide hips.

I got my blood checked out for hormonal imbalances some time ago, when trying to figure out what the bejesus is wrong with my system. Most women scored about 2-8 in the testosterone test, whereas I scored a whopping 28. :/

I get my period once every 3-6 months, and not for very long. Low, usually slightly monotone voice. I have a lot of muscle mass retained from my waterpolo days, especially in the shoulders, arms, pectorals and legs. My stomach and ass are annoyingly flabby though. :( My shoulders have a fairly wide span, slightly wider than my hips, but I also have a rather large bust. It's like I can't decide which gender to be at any one time. I also get mistaken for a guy almost all the time, and get called a pseudo-man jokingly by a lot the people close to me.

Just looking now, I do indeed have some extreme male digit ratio action happening here too.

And at 23 I'm still totally a tomboy :D

I'm not buff... but I'm not very thin either. I'm short though. I don't know. I seem to be slightly more "buff" (*cough*) than most girls, but it's not apparent or anything, and I do have strong female shapes. My voice isn't low and I don't have any excessive hair growth, hehe.

I do have a huge sex drive AND I have quite some "male" traits, like loving computers, not wanting to talk much... oh wait, right, Asperger's it was called.

i have quite a lot of muscle retained from my gymnastics days, and have always been very strong for my size, with a well muscled back and what my partner calls 'russian weightlifter' neck and shoulders.
i also had very large well muscled legs, but have recently got back down to a better weight for me and my thighs at least have slimmed down somewhat.
i do however also have a good sized bust and curves, although i also have the longer ring finger thingy going on.
am also not particularly 'feminine in attitude either lol, tho these days im favouring long hair and short skirts ( has to be leather tho )usually combined with high heeled scary biker boots

I've always been very weak, in the arms especially
I dont understand the female fashion though, it seems really confusing and complicated to me, although I would like to understand it 8)

I may indeed have high testosterone levels. I'm not buff but I do have really defined muscles and my facial features are quite androgynous. I've been mistaken for a male before.

I also have a low voice, overly high sex drive, and I'm told I'm unusually strong for my size.

Since it isn't causing me any health problems, though, I haven't actually had my levels taken :)

I would not expect so. Consider that with many substances, exposure increases resistence to their effect (for instance a heroine junkie can take recreational doses that would be fatal to someone who has never previously been exposed to opiates).

Different hormones are important for triggering physiological development among other things. This entails short term exposure to higher levels of particular hormones. The exposure is caused by increased production of the hormones and a return to lower levels of the hormone results from decrease in the production of the hormone. None of this is consistent with one-time exposure to higher levels resulting in on-going raised levels. I do not see any particular reason to expect pre-natal exposure would be an exception to this (although I might be overlooking or unaware of some factor that would suggest as much).

Well it could be genetic, or hormone dysregulation, or even a result of dietary factors. Potentially the physiological aspects of emotional state might be implicated also (for instance the level and kind of stress one is currently experiencing and its physiological implications).

I have noticed that I am stronger than most woman that are my size. I've also noticed that while most woman work out and simply slim down and tone, when I work out I slim down and bulk up. I do like my calves though. I never really considered my build being part of Aspergers Syndrom but it does kind of make sense now. At my very slimmest I was a size 6 and still weighed 150lbs (which for a woman of my height is considered the high end of the healthy weight range). It's always been kind of agrivating because even when I was in peak physical condition I was still at the 'borderline' of being overweight supposedly. I wonder if doctors take this more androdgenous build into consideration when dealing with AS people. Is there a height and weight chart specifically for woman like us?

And, yeah my voice is deeper than most woman's but it's not as deep as most men... which is kind of cool because I have a pretty good ear for voices and accents so I can mimic fairly well. It's kind of cool too because when I sing in the car i've noticed that rather than singing in a 'comfortable octive' I usually sing in the same range as the music. So it's kind of cool to have that sort of mid range voice, even if it's not typical.

Oh and it comes in handy on the phone every now and then since alot of the bills are in the hubby's name but handling them is my job and some of the accounts he set up before we got married are only in his name so it makes it easier to just say i'm him (and oddly enough last time I did this the woman on the phone hit on me).

I'm definitely not "buff" but I've always found it really easy to gain muscle weight, unlike most of the females I know. back in my bartending days I had pretty good arm muscles, still kinda do but I much prefer that to wimpy arms most women have :P I could take a good punch in the upper stomach muscles too I think, but below that I have a bit of a pot belly so no six-pack. and definitely have jogger legs. no idea about my testosterone levels though, as long as I don't grow facial hair I'm unbothered ;)
