I don't have many sensory issues, but I have huge problems using tampons. Or, should I say, I can't use them at all. They hurt, they burn, they make me anxious and nervous. This sucks because pads are impractical sometimes.

(I used the search function, btw, but most of the posts about tampons are the old ones. Still, I'm glad to know I'm not the only with this problem).

So, it's not about inserting them. I can do that (I think). I can insert them properly (to stop feeling them), but it only lasts for a second and then it starts to burn. It's beyond disgusting. It hurts, it truly hurts and make me sore (and btw, I'm sexually active, for more than 10 years  so it's not that I can't, well, have anything inside me).

But speaking of which, sex can hurt too, at the same way, if I'm not aroused, so maybe that's it? Maybe I'm hypersensitive "down there"?

I guess there's nothing I can do to make tampons more comfortable. Any ideas, maybe?

Hi I am sensitive all over. I used to use tampons when I was younger but now that I am getting older I feel I can't. It is very uncomfortable. Doesn't burn but makes me nervous about the whole toxic shock, you can't keep it in too long and such. I would just honestly stick with pads.

As the above poster said stick with pads if the tampons are making you uncomfortable. I tried using tampons once and it was virtually impossible to get one in, then when I managed it it was so uncomfortable I had to take it out again and the thought of doing that ever again makes me itch, so it's pads for me.

Have you ever tried a mooncup? Could be an ideal solution for you if the tampons burn and the pads are not always a practical choice. Also you say it can sometimes hurt when you have sex, I'd suggest getting checked out as it could be that you have some sort of infection or it may be a simple case of not enough lubrication.

Yes if it hurts when you have sex you should see a gyn.

I wasn't able to use tampons for a long time (had attempted sex but it was too painful and penetration was just impossible). I think my problem was just an involuntary muscle contraction which I've since fixed with a dilator.

Having started using tampons, I do find them extremely itchy on occasion but otherwise I don't have a problem with them. Can you tell if the burning you feel is worse or better depending on the level of flow? Do different brands of tampons seem to be better or worse?

I've thought about switching to a menstrual cup myself since I've found that tampons leave little fibers in there.

Thanks for your replies.

The pain/discomfort during sex is not a new thing. And yes, I've been to several professionals over the years. They say it all seems ok so maybe i just have a narrow opening or something. And maybe I'm just too sensitive (in a bad way). I can't wear any underwear that's not 100% cotton: it itches and makes me so uncomfortable (so, no "sexy" underwear for me, only "granny panties"). Tampons seem to be just another issue related to this.

Are you on any medication that gives you a dry mouth? Because that will also cause vaginal dryness, which will make inserting a tampon even harder.
Sometimes a little KY jelly on the tip helps.

Also, there are some tampons I just can't use. The ones with the "scents" forget it. Some, it is the materials that are used.

It could also be the applicator. The card board ones drove me nuts. Plastic, not so much, and there are some that have none at all.

I HATE pads, but have issues with finding the right tampon for me. Some brands have little sample packs, so you aren't out of a lot of $$$.

Have you tried the ones that are marketed for teen/tween girls?

I'm not on medication. And I don't think dryness is an issue; it's more of a discomfort and bad sensation that's so annoying. I tried tween tampons, but to no avail. I can put them inside, but it's the same; they have to go out ASAP. I can't even imagine what would it feel after it's been there for a while (tampon, I mean). I never waited enough to find out.

I'm not really complaining... I'm used to pads. I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem, because people don't really understand it (including gynecologists). They say everything's fine down there. So I guess it's a sensory issue.

I can't stand them either. I've never been able to use one comfortably. I always end up feeling them. Tried them in high school, tried them in my 20s, no luck. I'm 47 and have had four babies vaginally. But I can't stand something that small like that in there. I'll stick with pads. With wings.

I've never tried them. The concept of sticking something up there and leaving it there for a couple hours sounds horrifying. Also the process of getting one in sounds disgusting. That and I'm too scared of toxic shock syndrome and not being able to get it out. I'm also very small down there so I don't think they'd have anything small enough to fit and anything small enough to fit would need to be changed within an hour anyway. :/

I don't think I am that small down there but I have pretty much the same issues. I have used them before though but it is pretty scary. I am very afraid of toxic shock. I hate how uncomfortable they feel. It is really painful to me.

It's really weird talking about that stuff when you have a Fluttershy avatar. I read your posts in her voice and it doesn't sound right.

But seriously, yeah. I don't think I'll ever use tampons. >.<

I always use tampons and they don't bother me but when I was a teenager I had problems getting them in and found them uncomfortable.

Anything else getting inserted I find painful or unpleasant. I've gotten used to tampons though.

I personally don't have any probs, but I have heard of a problem called vaginismus which causes some women discomfort. It can be psychological and no one is really sure what causes it. I have heard of some women getting help to overcome it though through talking therapy with a psychologist. Dunno if that helps.

I thought that might be the case, especially since sex often hurts me, too. Bu my gynecologist(s) say everything's fine (and I'm actually fine with the gyn examination - I don't find it painful or even embarrassing). So I don't know.

I guess it's a sensory issue.
