I have AS, OCD, BI-polar and depression. when i take the depo i get insomnia, get really aggravated making meltdowns more frequent. I get impatient snap at people. feel angry.

I just figured this out, it happened last time i had it, a year or so ago. I got the depo again cause i am going to see my boyfriend. and all the same symptoms returned. I feel like i am constantly pms . also i realized it should not be taken if your family history includes Brest cancer (like my mom had).

So if you suffer from mental illness i would suggest not taking this method. save your self from the trouble, if you get it, it could effect you like this for up to 6 months from just 1 shot.

ye be warned!

oh and also it makes your bones weak.

Whew!

For a moment I thought you might say that the DEPO shot causes neurotypicalism ...

;)

I never had that experience. It took away my sex drive is all. I still haven't gotten it back because I don't feel like having sex ever.

Been on it for a good 2 years, I'm more senstive to stress and have no sex drive whatsover. Periods last up to a month, or sometimes arrive after three months of no period.

On the plus side, no baby...

Im glad you said this. I am on the contraceptive pill (to control my severe PMS) and someone told me I should try the injection. Luckily when someone told the doctor this for me, he said it was not a good idea because it lasts so long and you don't know what the side-effects might be.

I can't deal with any contraceptive that messes with your hormones. The last time I went on The Pill, I got so depressed and had such mood swings that I ended up breaking up with the guy I was seeing, which kind of defeated the point of taking it in the first place, lol. I haven't been seeing anyone for about a year and haven't had to worry about this for a while, but I think the next time around I may try an IUD.

I'm NT and on my second Depo shot and it is living hell.
Not only did it kill off what (extremely, very) little sex drive I had left, it also made me incredibly angry and moody.
I'm only on it until I can get my tubes tied.
:(

My GP has been trying to talk me into getting the Depo Shot. I don't need contraception... she recommended it for heavy periods. I couldn't believe it. I have a history of depression that's nearly 2 decades long and I have suffered like a dog, so there's no way I would risk something that could make me worse, even if the risk is small (and with the Depo the risk actually seems pretty big!). Once you've had it, there's little you can do about the side effects. Plus it's not actually guaranteed to help with heavy bleeding. In fact, it can make it worse!

Sorry about the rant, but my GP would have given it to me then and there without any further discussion of the pros and cons. I am extremely disgusted by her attitude. It's like she has chosen to ignore my entire mental health history.

I never thought about depo affecting me but in hindsight every time I was on the shot I was manic and PMSy. Now I have the implant and I have no ill affects, perhaps because it is such a low and consistent dosage.

I've been on it for 6 months now and i'm bloated all the time and i'm angry! I was gonna stop taking it but my mom is kind of forcing me to take it one last time while I go to europe with my bf... I cant be on anything else besides the pill. (i hate taking pills and i also forget to take them) and all the other bc methods won't let me because I'm only 22 and I have no kids.

I had a friend that had those shots and she thought they were great. She barely even got her period on them. It can affect different people differently.

I had Norplant for 5 years and wouldn't recommend it. When I first got it I was bleeding so much. In the first month after I got it I bled over 20 days that month.

When I had a Depo shot I bled for eleven months straight (with a day or two off at a time) and had dramatic mood swings from intense unexplained anger to many, many crying spells. The pill provided an intense pregnancy hormone experience complete with nausea that lasted throughout the day and fatigue. Both pretty much eliminated any desire for sex so I didn't seem to be able to manage a hormonal form of birth control without disabling side effects.

Yea i have been having constant bleeding since November.

Sorry you have a bad doctor you should get a better one!

I had a bad doctor that said the pain i was having was in my head, that i was worrying about nothing. by the time I got a new doctor the cysts in my ovaries were the size of an orange and a grape fruit. 3 gynos later i got one that wasn't going to do a full hysterectomy (btw that first gyno lied to me and said she was just going to look via incision and a camera and not do anything until she knew what was going on. but i luckily found out before surgery she had scheduled me for a full hysterectomy!! !) the gyno that operated on me cared about me as a person not just a pay check. he was the obgyn that delivered me as a child. he cared about his job and was hard on himself if he ever failed, he so rarely failed that he did not even have malpractice insurgence. he saved both of my ovaries and my fertility, he even had a cancer doctor help with the surgery in case it was cancer. he did a good job because he was a good doctor. I am telling you all this to impress upon you the importance of having good doctors. it can literally save you or kill you. if i hadn't switched doctors my old one probably wouldn't have found out i have pneumonia but my new one caught it right away. I am now getting treatment for it. but i wouldn't be if i didn't have a good doctor.

If you are bleeding alot from the shot, go back to the doctor to get birth control pills. Take it until you stop bleeding.

Sounds like symptoms of menopause, Just Me. I have had horribly painful & ultra bloody periods that I despised. I have been unable to use normal forms of BC as my symptoms are only aggravated by the hormones...this has been an issue ever since I was in my 20s. Even the smallest amount of hormone supplementation made me crazy: irritable, flew off the handle at anything & everything, moody, interrupted sleep patterns, etc. It was terrible to live like that. I gave up BC completely in my mid-20s. A tubal ligation in my early 30s was my only answer for BC.

Are there other forms of BC you could try? There are more options now than there were before.

Tomboy
