I did this when I was 18. I don't know why I did it. I fancied a man I knew so much, and I spoke to him a lot but we weren't dating or anything because of the age gap, but I couldn't resist telling my friends that he was my boyfriend. I just had to do it. They had seen him before but not to speak to, so they knew who I was talking about. Luckily I'm not friends with them not (that's another story) so I don't have to worry about them finding out the truth or anything. I haven't been friends with them for about 3 years now and I don't see them about anywhere, thank God.

Anyone else lied about having a boyfriend before? Did you get away with it, or did you get found out? Or did you end up having to cover one lie up with another until you got yourself into a complete mess and had to involve other people and get them to play along in order to not get found out by your friends?

i wouldn't lie and tell people i was involved because i wanted so much for it to be true. If i lied about having a girlfriend i'd do it to stop people bothering me. Most nt peoples attitudes are that if you're single you should be looking and it's annoying and i just want to be left alone on it. If i lied and said i had a fake girlfriend it'd be to stop people asking stupid questions that i cba with.

No i've never done it but it's been tempting when i was younger.

I tell people Dr. Spencer Reid is my boyfriend but I'm not sure how many believe it.

I only ever lied to say I don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend when I was younger, so people wouldn't ask me lots of questions. I generally didn't want them to know until I was sure we're steady. I wouldn't hold hands with them in public in case someone saw us, so I can tell them we're just friends. :D Curiously my parents would believe anything I tell them, even if I'm staying in their home for a few days that we're "just friends".

Yes. It happens when I sense a man is interested in me. I say it because I have a severe case of 'commitment phobia'.

And of dating......and men.

Yes, this! Warding off the creeps: "Well, I would love to chat, but I have to get going. My boyfriend is waiting for me!" Easiest getaway!

Plenty of times! There is something about telling others that you have a boyfriend...

Quite recently. It wasn't to boost my self esteem: there was a guy chatting me up at the bus stop, and all I wanted to do was read my book in peace while I waited for the bus. I knew that saying "Yes" to the "Do you have a boyfriend" question would end the conversation quickly (and in a nicer manner than "f**k off, I'm trying to read").

No, I don't see why. There are at least 203847023486731028740837465 ways to blow your cover, and it achieves nothing.

I wouldn't call it a lie but I have exaggerated by referring to guys who I dated for short periods of time (but was never "official" with) as ex-boyfriends to hide the fact that at 23 I've never really had a boyfriend. It spares me the pity/shock/'I need to hook you up with someone right now!' reaction I always seem to get.

^^i agree with this. i have had guys that wouldn't stop talking to me before and the times i said no to the "do you have a boyfriend?" question he wouldn't leave me alone and i would end up getting nasty with him to get him to leave me alone. so now i tell them yes just to get them to leave me alone so i can read or whatever else it is i'm trying to do.

When I was 13 I painted a hickey on my neck with eyeshadow. It was quite realistic, but all it got me was laughed at anyway.

I lied because I hate getting 5 million questions about the person and our relationship. Easier to say no.
